Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Great to have intelligent discussion rather than some of the nastiness aimed at our players.

I must visit Kilkenny next time I meet my mate in Weston.

Btw Woodsy, he is an East Belfast Glens supporter. We disagree on everything except Guinness. He has been a brilliant mate for 35 years now.

Take a short trip up the M5 to Portishead mate. Its an astonishingly ace place for what is these days largely a dormitory town for Bristol. If you like Guiness, my BIL, (Kilkenny man), says he has never drunk better outside of the Emerald Isle than in my local.

Last time we were over we were in Bath on the day of the All Ireland hurling final.

We found an Irish pub with three screens, two of which were showing Man United.

As the games went on the number of locals who stopped watching the soccer and became fascinated by the hurling was amazing.

We ended up explaining all the rules to Bath locals who had never seen the game before.

Huge breakthrough for Limerick that day - 2017. First All Ireland since 1973. They have now won three of the last four.

No real surprise!

My BIL was welcomed into the church at his wedding with a parade of Hurlers sort of slapping their sticks (?) together over his head. We were about 10 miles south of Kilkenny, cant remember the name of the village, but jeez, what a wedding, and what a welcome the handful of Brits got from his family and friends.

The sticks are called hurls mate. Made by hand from ash timber. Incredible skill in making them.

Was it Thomastown? If so you were very near Mount Juliet.

Otherwise maybe Callan?

Gowran.
Lovely historic village. Famous racecourse although I have no interest in horse racing myself. You are very accurate with about ten miles although it is actually more north than south of Kilkenny.

It is pronounced locally as Go-ren rather than Gow-ran. Similarly Kilkenny's stadium is pronounced No- Lan Park although spelt Nowlan Park.

No Sass. I was born and bred in Dublin. Three of my grandparents were born in Dublin. So guess what.....I am a Dub.

Now go back further by and my grandmother's parents were from Tipperary. In GAA it is all about parish and County.

I am a complete Dublin fanatic in both football and hurling. I am a Shamrock Rovers fanatic in soccer. I live in Kilkenny, a beautiful city, lovely people, but just don't mention hurling!!! Their nickname is the Cat's. There is a reason for that!

If Tipp are playing I will support them but I am a Dub through and through. Love Kilkenny, just not their hurling fans :)
My Nan used to have a saying “fought like Kilkenny cats” is that where the nickname comes from?

lol

Really? Blimey. Like I said, it was an utterly fabulous wedding, (piss up)! Somehow we all got to a hotel on the banks of a river (Nore?) in the centre of Kilkenny for the reception. Had a terrace overlooking the river. I think.

Was brill.

Absolutely. The legend that is centuries old is of two cats that fought each other so hard, eventually only their tails were left :)

Kilkenny's jersies are black and amber stripes - like a tiger.

As I have said, a lovely place to live, wonderful people....just don't mention hurling!!!
