Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

Morning everyone,

Well it isn't good is it , every morning we wake up to another atrocity from the Ukraine.

Today is Mrs Js birthday so we are having a day out at the Forest of Bowland with a bit of antique shopping in Clitheroe and lunch in a Mexican.

Well it seems that everyone on here is accepting that we should talk about the invasion now so here's my take.

Putin is leading his country and the World down a very dark path and I fear a path of no return. He only understands 1 thing and that is force and power in return.

We all say he had to be stopped but how. If sanctions are going to work ( and pure economic sanctions have never worked in this situation in the past ) then it will take years .

In that time Putin will destroy an independent country and kill hundreds and thousands of totally innocent people.

Unchecked he will look to pick off the next non NATO country probably Moldova ,perhaps he will look to the North.

No one wants another World War and the terrible threat of nuclear war but history tells us that unless we stand up to this madman now the cconsequences could be even worse in the future.

We must stop the slaughter in Ukraine.

And to think.that some Evertonians are complaining that Usmanov / USM have been sanctioned and the implications for Everton. Against the background of his mate Putin being the butcher of Europe it is beyond me. If you sleep with dogs , you get fleas. Everton will have to accept the price for taking dirty money.

@Sassy Colombian delighted to hear that the job is going well and that you are sorting your work life balance.

I will PM you some photos of my garden ( don't want to clogg up this thread and bore Fred).

Great to hear everyone's musical journey and tastes.

When I was young the only thing I used to listen to was the Beatles , and I still love them now. Paul was always my favourite of the Fab 4. I still regularly play Beatles , Wings and Macca .

Like Fred I was into Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk , Wakeman, Mike Oldfield , Jean Michel Jarre and Camel. Used to love a bit of prog rock!

I've always liked melodic pop like Joan Armatrding , Simon and Garfunkel, Steely Dan , Fleetwood Mac etc.

In the 80/90s I liked punk and then electronics similar to @anjelikaferrett.

Again a few outliers , for instance I am a huge Kate Bush fan , I have every album and think that she's a genius.

In the 90s I started to get into jazz in a big way. I love jazz from the classical priod of 1950 to 1964 , particularly Miles Davis . I think ( at Mrs Js last count!) I have about 2000 jazz cds!

I like some classical music ( an old schoolmate is the leader of the Seville Orchestra) but not opera or choral.

@Sassy Colombian I am also into a lot of Latin and World music. Have you listened to Bebel Gilberto ( daughter of Astrud who sang on The Girl from Ipanema with Stan Getz) , check out Tanto Tempo. Also you might like Ceu another Brazilian female singer.

@Terrarian I love seeing those photos of Daisy , keep them coming.

Oh , we got a football match tonight. Good luck to Frank and the boys , we really shouldn't need it.

I hope that everyone has a lovely day. My thoughts are with those brave souls in Ukraine.
wish Mrs J a very happy birthday. The Forest of Bowland is lovely. Haven't been there for a very long time. Sadly I agree with your bleak outlook regards Putin. The whole situation is terrifying. I've blocked and unfriended quite a few of my leftie acquaintances on social media who appear to be making excuses for him. Yeah but it's the west's fault. Shouldn't have expanded NATO. Ukrainians are Nazis etc. No it is not the West's fault and the far right has a presence in almost every country. He has invaded a peaceful democracy with eyes on more. I'm genuinely shocked by the attitude of these people. I admit some of them are strange but I always thought they fell into the category of weird but OK. Clearly not.

Hello everybody. Hope all is well. We are still planning on going to Bilbao on Tuesday. I have to admit that the current world situation is making less excited about it as I would be. It seems completely surreal that we could be on the brink of a catastrophic war and everybody is just carrying on as normal. Although I'm not sure what else we are supposed to do.

@Gwladysover George was my favourite Beatle too. @Armaghtoffee I liked the early U2 stuff but not so much the later. Although my favourite song is the one they did with Johnny Cash called The Wanderer. It is brilliant. I love Johnny Cash. My kids are fans too - years of school run brainwashing. However they used to sing along to Jackson. First line "We got married in a fever" I realised one day they were singing "We got married in a beaver"!

My Dad loves Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry so I definitely have an appreciation of them because of him. Wouldn't say they are my favourites though.

Anyway back to work I go. Catch up later for the match. we can't mess this up....can we?

In the race riots I lived off Breck road and although I was only 100 yards from the fighting I only found out in the papers the next morning ,no Mr Google then .
I live about 10 miles outside of a small town 50,000 pop. so for the Ruskies to be interested in me and the better half is unlikely and there is no reason for them to bomb the town either ,that means as with covid ( touch wood ) it would basically pass us by ,other than the hardship that would of course follow .
So I am not too concerned about that it is just that I hoped that the devil would never have the gonads to do it ,I fear for the younger people whose lives will be changed much more than mine and for the lives inevitably lost .Sad times indeed .

Good post Jazzy, my thoughts exactly regarding us and Usmanov, I don't care about Everton as much as I care about the people of Ukraine at the moment.
A big happy birthday to Mrs J today and I hope you have a nice meal out.

I absolutely love the disco scene from the late 70s early 80s Jazz. I suppose it reminds me of going to school/church discos in my teens and then going to night clubs. Basically my kopping off days then lol . Love the likes of Candi Staton, Tavares, Rose Royce, Earth Wind and fire, Kool and the Gang, Odyssey, Barry White and especially Chic.

When we used to have house parties back in Liverpool, the whole place would be up dancing when I put the disco play on the ipod. When you've had a few drinks down you it couldn't be helped. ;)
Great music you've quoted in that there post, I left Merseyside for Scotland in 1980 and up until that point I was out and about around New Brighton, Birkenhead, Liverpool and Chester clubs listening to those tunes, can't believe that clubs nowadays would be anywhere near as intoxicating as those days and we never needed any drugs, just copious amounts of bitter did it for me ?

If you were anything like me LT you'd need the beer to pluck up the courage to ask the girls to dance.

I used to drink golden back in the day. The draught beer back then was disgusting but mixing bitter and lager somehow used to improve the taste. ?

And for those who don't like classical music ,just listen and tell me then you don't like the harmony . If you must skip to 1.04

Beautiful mate. One of my favourite classical numbers although I have to admit I didn't know what it was until 1 min 4. lol

You may not be surprised to know that we loved classical music too, or at least some classical music; never been that fussed on some of the high brow stuff. We were big fans of Andrea Bocelli and went to see him live twice at the Echo Arena. Work also sponsored the Liverpool Phil and had a box there, and Cal and I often entertained my clients there. We'd probably go about 2 or 3 times a year as hardly any of the other managers were into classical.

I chose 2 of our favourite classical pieces at Cal's funeral. "Vide cor meum" and "Con te partiro"
