The valley we live in is pretty much at/below sea level, so the Romans built a system of rhynes, (small rivers) to drain it for farming. They are still here, and ultimately drain into the River Severn. Farming started then, and we, well I, live in a house just a few yards above the reclaimed farmland.
So pretty ancient. The local pub was the village prison in the 1600's. Glad its a pub now.
