Always, ALWAYS wear a helmet when I'm going on a proper ride. If I'm just going the shop on my bmx I'll probably just stay on the pavements and do without, but it should be compulsory really.

By the way NHD, as others have said your lad will be fine.

At his age on a school trip he won't build up enough speed to do himself any harm.

Met Schumacher and to echo the comments here he is a totally sound lid. Had the aura of a mega star but still was happy to share a joke.

Get well soon fella.

Can we have a debate on helmets now, please?

I always wear a helmet, even to bed. As you can see from my avatar.

Michael was wearing one too.

It sounds hopeful now that he'll pull through.

What remains to be seen is just what damage has been done. He'll have a long road back I would imagine.

I would love to ski, might visit the ski slope in Manchester to get a feel of it, what would be the best for beginners, skis or snowboards

I still don't think this news story is going to get me wearing a helmet on the pistes, mind. Although I should. I don't go off piste like.

There shouldn't even need to be a debate. Having cycled, skiied and snowboarded for over 25 years I would advise everyone to wear a helmet. And don't think that just because you're only a beginner/slow/staying on piste your safe without one, because there's more risks out there than just the ones you pose to yourself.
