Being cocky doesn't mean having a bad attitude. You only have to read accounts of his early years at United to see how hard he worked to become as good as he is
Exactly! Compare him to someone like Nani at MUFC. A player who came in with high potential and expectations but often his attitude and work ethic has let him down. Don't get me wrong.. Nani is a good player, but has not turned out to be half the player he could have been. On the other hand, Ronaldo always had an arrogance about him but not attitude or behavior issues. He did have an insatiable drive to better himself as a player and it has taken him to the very top.
Reading some of the posts in this thread, it seems like some are just impatient and want us to sign someone regardless of their character or the head they have on their shoulders. I've heard excuses like it's okay to have an attitude because he's young. That's just daft really. There are many players who despite their young age display the right mental attributes to succeed.
Compare these two young players of the same nationality, age, and talent ability/potential and see how different their fortunes will be. I'm talking, of course, about Ross Barkley and Ravel Morrison. Our Ross has a fantastic demeanor, work ethic, and listens well to instruction from Roberto. Ravel, on the other hand, has a history of legal troubles off the pitch and fights with teammates on it. This is the player who is so inept outside of football, he can't even be bothered to take care of his most basic dental hygienics! That's why for all their similarities in footballing capabilities, one player is destined for the very top, while the other is one I hold very little hope for of realizing his potential.
Lukaku is another player who has not only the skillset to succeed on the pitch but the mentality as well. Lukaku's excellent technical ability and impressive physicality are readily apparent to observers, but just as important is what often goes unseen: his dedication to being a student of the game. This is a player who watches every Premier League game every week on his own time so he can watch other strikers movements and look for ways he can improve his game. He wants to the best and has the drive to get there. That's why he will undoubtedly be one of the finest strikers in the world in just a few short years. He is the caliber of player we should be striving for and not settling for less. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum.
