Migrant Crisis

This ... and I don't think it's unfair to expect such.

I've just finished a year's contract in Iraq for a major Oil Co. We employed several Syrian lads, generally as engineers .. good lads. They were well mannered, hard working, basically very employable. Their families bailed out of Syria many years ago so they had spent their formative lives in neighbouring countries (Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan etc) where they'd been educated and acquired their skill.

There was a time when we considered employing lots of young engineers and went through due process and asked for their input. They were highly resistant to employing fellow Syrians under the age of 30 who had not grown up outside of Syria as they had probably little or no acceptable education, knew only conflict as that's what they had grown-up with and had 'that' mindset. Also they were typically 'work shy'. The same could be said of Iraqi men (the majority of whom are less than 30 y/o anyway). We didn't hire any.

Why would we welcome anyone to the UK who offers nothing but 'risk' and liability ? Don't we have enough already ?
How dare you talk sense you Nazi!!!

so my basic understanding seems to be trouble in home country, people flee said country and now they need somewhere to go?

MY one question is what is stoppng others in the future fleeing in danger because of whatever is going on and ending up in countries such as ours? I mean i'm all for human rights and helping people but at what point is just letting them into countries not the answer anymore?

Interesting angle that the Hungarian parliament just approved measures to seal the borders. One is reminded of Hungary's role in 1989 and the dismantling of the Iron Curtain which led to the mass exodus of East Germans through Hungary.
Believe it was Twain who said history doesn't repeat itself but rhymes

nope. just clarification of why I said it. people deserve respect and to be treated with decency no matter where they come from. until they break laws we should welcome them as citizens of the world

Your good intentions are admirable indeed.

Can you clarify whether you'd want to welcome absolutely anybody/everybody into the UK/EU, regardless of numbers? If they're in need, we should just do it as its 'the right thing to do'?

i found obtaining a working visa for Australia very tough. i was under the age of 30 at the time, with a skill that they were advertising for and had a shortage of. i had to take medical tests and some skill set tests online and aquire a BLUE card, just so that i could enter the country. i also had to prove i had sufficent funds to stay for at least a month too.

if i never looked up to standard i would NOT have obtained my visa, and thats that. to be honest i think Australia has the right approach toward emigration.

i dont think entering Britain is anything like the sort??

The poverty angle is a good point. When you see rich people it drives a desire in some for more. The problem is it's all relative. Poverty in the UK is not quite the same as poverty in the Sudan. The real issue of course is how to change the situation. China went from being poor country to a rich country. Poor countries can do the same if they want but it doesn't happen overnight and it has to be worked at. The UK today is a totally different place to that at the end of WW2 because we worked at it. Sometimes the poor countries just need a bit of technical and financial help to move forward but Western countries, who have both in abundance, are now very wary of the 'colonial or imperial or racist' stigma and do not want any offer of assistance thrown back in their face, so they just give a bit of money to make everyone feel better and the cycle continues.........

absolutley, the social media/internet thing is interesting tho...people can see what other countries are like and want a better life, are we gonna see mass movement, what will do about it? will we be able to stop it if we want to?

hmmmm

TBH Orban is probably doing what he is required to do by EU law (ie: process the asylum seekers at or close to their country of entry), its the Germans that kicked this off with their "we will not deport Syrians" announcement and who have been desperately trying to escape the consequences of it ever since.

the best idea would be to REGULATE it.

at present, the government can only give us figures on how many LEGAL migrants we have coming in. they have NO IDEA on the amount of ILLEGAL migrants are entering our country.

so I am guessing, but you know. Interesting. So any reason you have witheld this information. Kind of makes you an accessory

common sense. The Italian authorities reported that ISIS fighters were previously entering Europe from Libya disguised as migrants (not much of a disguise granted). Why wouldn't they enter (return to) Europe via the 'Greece route' ?

If you can get hold of the POB for any of the vessels used by the migrants I'll have a looksie and get back to you.

Since that time, and to the best of my limited knowledge Hungary hasn't been far off electing far right ultra naturalistic governments.

If we just open the doors then everywhere will fail. Apart from real refugees and workers that we need, we should tell the world that the doors are closed but that, if asked, we will help to build up their countries. There will always be despots who don't want this but at least their people will know that the only way forward is to change their own country....

yeah let us all get jobs with immigration control then maybe we can state something with certainty. I had already decided anyone who using the phrase 'common sense' can be ignored

well, people have been waiting for over ten years for their cases to be heard so you may be right

Merkel and co have a lot to answer for in this respect. They turned on the tap and have no idea how to switch it off......
