minor things that make you fume

Don`t touch the 1.6 petrol engine, the gear box is made of chocolate and the clutch can go even on new ones ( mega bucks ).

The 1.6 diesel is a much better car and not that difference performance wise.
It's a MK5 2005 with 60k miles. 1.6 FSI. I've read there's a lot of problems with it and nowhere near as reliable as the MK4.

I've spent a week furiously looking and been to see 3 cars which were all awful. If I didn't have other financial commitments to deal with at the moment I'd get a lease and be done with it. It's too much hassle.

Get an approved used one or if you know anyone that knows what they're looking at get yourself down to an auction

The Mk5`s are good with the right engine - the 16 FSi isn`t one of them.

Also that mileage is suspiciously low - works out at just over 3k a year.

If it hasn`t been owned by a pensioner or as a second car, I`d be looking very hard at the service book !

If you`ve got the cash, there`s loads out there mate, it`s just being able to wait until the right one comes along.

The engine I`d go for is the - 1.9tdi ( generally bullet proof if looked after, fast, economical and some in a low tax bracket ).

I`ve had eight VW`s - Golfs / Polos and only ever had one bad one - a Mk 4 1.6 estate, with that engine in.

The gear box blew up in rural North Wales on Christmas day on the way to Christmas dinner :(

I'm looking at RAC approved dealers now. Even so a lot of them still have plenty shocking customer reviews.

I haven't got the balls for an auction.

It's got a FSH with stamps (apparently). I've seen a few with roughly the same mileage. The dealer talked me through the service history on the phone and all sounded in order.

My Polo got written off a few weeks ago and I got £2000 for it. Willing to stretch to £3000 but don't really want to go above that as I'm trying to buy a house later this year. Unfortunately I have to act relatively quickly as getting to work on the tube/bus takes 90 mins each way and I have to stand for nearly all of it. Horrible. It takes half that in the car. I'm going to try and get back up t'north next weekend and I'll buy the best I can find. I've seen a Mazda 2 for £2.5k 2010 reg which seems a sensible if boring option.

...noticed that myself today.

Lowton of Burnley took a throw on the right late in the first half and his left foot was clearly over the line. The resultant move produced a chance which was not taken but I wonder if that sort of thing would be scrutinised retrospectively by VAR had there been a goal.

I doubt it considering as part of his foot was on the touchline it's a legal throw.

I'd have to see it again. The whole foot may have been over. Presumably the linesman would be watching.

Nah, i watched it back to check cause i remembered the throw in you were talking about, i actually noticed at the time his left foot was half on the line and half over.

However it is a good point regarding if his foot was entirely on the pitch would VAR review it if a goal was scored more or less direct from the throw in. They probably wouldn't i guess as it diesn't really affect what happens after unless the player is stood 10ft on the pitch or something.

Mk5 was universally acknowledged as inferior to the Mk4 and that is still reflected in the second-hand prices now. Problem is, it's virtually impossible to find a MK4 in good condition that anyone wants to sell. The 2.3 V5 petrol engine is delicious, the 2.8 VR6 is even better - one of the most satisfying cars I've ever driven.

Footy stats.
Shots on target, assists, passing accuracy etc.
Load of rubbish.

Preferred it when a goal was just ' A Move '.
