I've been unhappy with Everton too much recently so I've avoided GOT for a bit.

I believe it was the now defunct urban splash. A flat could be had for 20,000 at one point so the rumour goes. 3-400,000 now

Why is Leicester - Lester? Edinburgh - Edinbra'? Why is Alnwick read as it is?

Why is there a town (well, hamlet I guess) in Scotland called Bogside ffs?!

Because it's built next to marshland. More worryingly there is a similarly sized place up here called cock bridge, origins of name unknown.

It was a site that old engine oil and similar stuff was put into drums and exported to be re refined for other use. Was owned by an Everton minor shareholder. It had to be left unused for years so spill ages ran away naturally before any building could take place.

The land has been conquered by lots of different peoples Celts, Romans, Saxons, Danes/Vikings, Normans, German and Dutch. Each one of those brought their own language and pronunciations that have distorted the spelling and pronunciations of place names over time.
