I think Bungle has a very relevant point here. It seems to get worse year on year, people solely basing their opinion on numbers and drowning this forum in their numerical screeds as if they are stone cold proof of a player's relative worth/worthlessness. It seems to be the natural evolution of the footy manager scouting problem that has grown arms and legs over the last few years and is now swatting airplanes out of the sky from the top of the Empire State Building

Stats can be used for certain aspects of the game .
But to base your value of a player solely on them is ridiculous. Like an assist might be a 2 yard pass across an empty goal but the pass to play in the assister makes it.
Or a winger puts in 5 world class balls that are not scored . Not his fault. But wont show up on his assists chart.

It'd show up on his xA mate, stats that.

Some people love a stat. Others don’t.

Some people love certain players. Others don’t.

If only there were a place on the Internet where opinions could be put forth and debated sensibly - a kind of forum if you will - without these people not only resorting to childish insults, but also debating the means by which people arrive at their own opinions as if there’s any proven subjective measure by which to define a player’s ability or worth.

....i’m old but I accept and welcome the statistical analysis undertaken on players, but that should be balanced with scouting. The stats might actually be a good way of identifying potential targets.

The reasonableness of this post makes it seem shockingly out of place here.
