Not really mate, it's pointing out that footballers can have purple patches. It doesn't make them great players.
I understand that but you've not compared Dom to someone having a purple patch you compared him to someone having one good game.

And I'm a little worried you might be right, but our inability to do anything with the ball in midfield makes me think that it might be more that than Dom at the minute.

Yes I've seen him foul people.

What I'm trying to figure out is how we reconcile these views that he doesn't care and isn't trying with the ones where he's out of control and putting too much into it. Someone please help me understand how this works.

I’ve never said he doesn’t care or he isn’t trying.....

But I would suggest that criticism comes because he is ‘trying’ in the wrong part of the pitch.

He’s running round like a mad man in his own half trying to show that he cares, but actually just giving fouls away and inviting pressure. Whereas when we’re on a break he’s not making the right runs or holding the ball up with his back to goal to bring other people in to play, or showing any football intelligence at all.

That’s what concerns me. As Lanolin said, the step overs etc. may look fancy and suggest he’s got skill (which he does have!) but he looks totally incapable of harnessing this skill and turning it into end product.

Positional play, spacial awareness, tactical discipline, football intelligence, all that stuff can be developed in a young player. But it is very concerning that Kean really lacks any of those qualities.

Again to compare with Gordon, Gordon has already shown he has way more tactical discipline and positional sense than Kean, hence Carlo has trusted him to start in a few games. Whereas Kean couldn’t be trusted to see out 10 minutes at old Trafford

You obviously don't know me very well if you think the stepovers are what interest me. Tactically is he learning? Absolutely. But I do think he gives effort always despite people seeming to say otherwise. If that wasn't you I apologize as a bunch of you guys are coming at me right now. My feeling is until I see it not happen from a run of games I'm going to believe he could get us goals if afforded that actual chance. He did score on his last start remember.

Deffo needs to start as main striker against Villa to see what he can produce
If he starts well Villa will crap themselves.Saw him start against Watford in the league cup however and he was clueless. Here's hoping.

I'm still championing Vlasic and Lookman so I think that answers that.

Gordon has shown a bit more but honestly if Gordon went on a ten game run where he struggled would people still be patient with him? I doubt it.

I really only have two points here: 700 league minutes without any kind of consistency with when the minutes actually happen isn't really a realistic chance to prove yourself and even if you think it is talented young players need to be given more than one chance before being written off and sold. Hell I'd still give Tom Davies another shot if we could get him in a box to box role that isn't asking him to be an actual good defensive player.

Oh and I guess the last point is as supporters we need to come around to the idea of patient development of young players as the path to success.
Like Leicester?
