Moyes to Sunderland

4th is 4th, its not a cup or success.
No but its better than watching the team struggle and have crap players signing for you.

I mean at the end of the day that 4th trophy has paid for a 60k state of the art stadium, a few top players, 2 world class players and some games against the top teams. would you genuinely swap the past 10 years as an everton fan for seeing everton have that?

That's all nice and good, still not a trophy.

We can do well and be happy, without labelling it as "success".

I do think its needs pointing out that we didnt actually qualify for the champions League so we didnt benefit from any of it ourselves.

Moyes started all the "go the game" "peoples club" soundbites which the club use to keep our actual footballing expectations down. That and his abysmal vs-top-four record are the only stain on his memory for me. If it wasn't for a certain Bald-soon-to-be-retiring-ref-from-Italy he might be talked about in better terms.

Probably due more to personel (which may be his fault; the boards fault or a bit of both). For example no one in their right mind would say that Carsley was a bad player for us however when we played really good teams back then they'd just skip past him like he was standing still. That didn't happen after Fellani got settled in and our record against the top 4 was quite good. Granted with Fellani our form fell against the sides below us partially because they just riled him up.

I think the biggest problem that Moyes had was the lack of a front man in all his sides (which is somewhat his fault and probably somewhat the board's too). We always tried band-aids to stop a huge gaping wound. Sometimes it admittedly worked (Saha/Bent for a season; Jela for a 1/2 season) but too often we were left with a trash heap up front. When we splurged a bit and got Yak to go along with AJ and Cahill, Moyes had his best side in 07-08. And when the striker went bad, like Jela in Moyes season, we were left with a side good enough to soak up 60% possession and put good crosses time after time only for it to go nowhere. Roberto actually didn't play all that much different than how we played in Moyes last season. He just added Rom, and got production from Geri and Barkley.

It happened at Utd too. RVP got hurt (shocking I know) and there was nothing (and/or no credible replacements behind him) so you just had cross after cross to no one.

Sunderland manager David Moyes: I was misled over January transfer cash and sale of the club
  • Sunderland will have no cash to spend in January as they try to avoid relegation
  • David Moyes says he was unaware that owner Ellis Short planned to sell club
  • He would have thought twice about taking on Sunderland, had he known issues
  • Jan Kirchhoff will be sidelined for at least two months to worsen the situation

David Moyes says he would have thought twice about taking the Sunderland job had he known there would be no money to spend next month and that owner Ellis Short wanted to sell the club.

The former Manchester United manager, who took over at the Stadium of Light in late July, has revealed American billionaire Short did not inform him of his intention to sell.

Moyes also claimed promises about new year investment have been broken, leaving him no means of bringing in players to cover a spate of serious injuries.

Moyes has been told he will have no cash to bring players in during the January window

When he arrived, Moyes repeatedly spoke of 'guarantees' made by Short with regard to improving the Sunderland squad.

But the owner has since told his manager that cash will not be available next month — and Moyes isn't happy.

'Sunderland always had an appeal to me, but if I had known about the situation I would have needed to look at it in a different way,' he said.

'I would have had to think a lot more about it, because at the end of the day I want to manage in the Premier League.

'I did not know the club could be going up for sale, I was not made aware of that before. I didn't see us having no money (in January). Even in the summer I knew what we were spending was small in comparison — and I said that to the owner.

'But I hoped it would be a short period and we would then have the next period (January) to get things done. That has shown itself not to be the case.

'I'm disappointed that I will not be able to do some work in January and try and build on what we've done.'

Moyes cannot understand relegation-threatened Sunderland's reluctance to spend

Moyes was dealt another blow on Friday with news that midfielder Jan Kirchhoff will be sidelined for at least two months with a torn cartilage, joining long-term absentees Duncan Watmore, Lee Cattermole, Paddy McNair and Lynden Gooch on the sidelines.

That being the case, he cannot understand the reluctance to spend, especially given that the club's top-flight status will depend on it.

'After the Kirchhoff injury I feel like saying, "Come on, wait a minute",' he said.

'The way the money levels have gone in the Premier League, if you want to be there then you need a bit of help. I would hope that we can find a way of giving us a chance of having a go at it.'

Black Cats star Jan Kirchhoff is sidelined for at least two months with a torn cartilage

Moyes, whose bottom-placed team entertain Watford on Saturday afternoon, would have every right to quit given developments of the past week, during which chief executive Martin Bain has revealed that Short is open to offers for the club and that transfer funds are 'very, very limited'.

But Moyes said: 'I have not been tempted to walk because I saw some steel from the players and a belief in what they are doing.

'So I have thought to myself, "I came here to do a job and the first job is to keep us up". Other managers have done it and I have to as well — but my task might be slightly harder. After that I always said the bigger job was to build the club up.

Sunderland players show their dejection during Wednesday night's home defeat by Chelsea

'I find that (Short wanting to sell) difficult because I was saying I have come here to improve the club.

'So there is a frustration with it but I am going to stand up, stick my chest out and get on with it. I have dealt with it in my head and I'm going to fight for it and I expect everyone else at the club to do the same.

'I have a lot of respect for the chief executive who was big and brave enough to say it how it is to the supporters and everyone here.

'So if we can get everyone pulling together and say, "Come on, you're in it now, this is what we've got", sometimes that can galvanise you as well. That's what we have to try and do.'

Strange when you consider that in May 2016, a whole two months before Moyes appointment, it was publicised that Short was looking to sell.

And the rumours of a possible sale were well reported even earlier than that, therefore I can't agree that it's a shock to him or anyone else.

Subsequently, if you're looking to sell then it's not surprising that the owner would be somewhat reluctant to invest further capital into the club.

However, if you're looking down the barrel of relegation then surely that would lower the value, so you would consider some limited investment.

For me it stinks of Moyes trying to already ensure that any potential relegation will not tarnish his fading reputation any more - it's all their fault etc!

Yeah I found his comments strange, it was widely reported a while ago that Short wanted out.

See they are losing a few players to the ACON, inc Kone, which means they might need a CB, maybe time for Jags to be let go? We could use that situation to get some wages off the Bill.
