Naismith? Thoughts?

Technically I think he is pretty ****e, but he seems to be able to get in good positions which result in goals. That's all you can ask for, like, especially with Jela playing ****e.

GOALS might be his main target for Everton – but Steven Naismith has some other festive aims on Merseyside.

The Scotland international is determined to make a difference, and not just to the Blues ongoing mission to break into the Premier League’s top four.

Naismith is already a committed charity supporter north of the border, and now he wants to continue that work in his adopted city.

Shortly before Christmas the 26-year-old will host a lunch for people sleeping rough at city homeless support charity the Whitechapel Centre.

The former Rangers player began funding a similar event in Glasgow last Christmas, and will continue that sponsorship back home this month alongside the new event in Liverpool – all paid for out of his own pocket.

Naismith, who hopes to make the yuletide lunch an annual event, said: “I support the homeless in Glasgow through a charity called Loaves and Fishes.

“They are similar to the Whitechapel Centre in the work that they do in feeding the homeless and trying to get them into their own accommodation. I am delighted to help the Whitechapel Centre in what is my newly adopted city.â€

David Carter, chief executive officer of the Whitechapel Centre insists it is a very welcome gesture on several fronts.

“We would like to thank Steven for sponsoring this Christmas dinner,†he said. “In addition to the money, which is very much needed and welcome, there is the other benefit of the awareness of the work done here.â€

The Loaves and Fishes event in Glasgow was in danger of being cancelled before Naismith stepped in last winter, and the former Kilmarnock player is even working towards setting up a trust when he retires.

Naismith, whose father is a social worker and whose mother works in a supermarket, was brought up in Stewarton, Ayrshire, and has said his charitable instincts did not come from any religious upbringing.

“I am an observant person rather than a big talker and I tend to notice things,†he said.

“It does not take long before you realise there are people who need help,†he told reporters in Scotland last Christmas.

“I do not feel special because I am a footballer.

“I feel lucky. I was an average student. I had dyslexia. I was terrible at reading.â€

The Whitechapel Centre was set up in 1975 to address the growing numbers of homeless people around inner city Liverpool.

The charity employs more than 60 staff and helps up to 1,800 people in the region each year by helping them meet basic needs such as breakfast, shower and laundry facilities, along with preventing people becoming homeless by giving free housing and welfare rights advice.

Staff also support people with mental health, drug and alcohol issues to stay in their own home.

Seems like a nice down to earth lad.

fair play to him, good to read that, but hes still a gash winger, the link up play between him an hibbert is about as cohesive and fluid as two OAP's in a supermarket aisle

He'd be the first person to come out and say that he's not a winger.

It continues to baffle me why people are slating a player being used out of position. If we threw Hibbert left wing next game, he'd have a shocker but it'd be glaringly obvious why he did; why is Naismith not receiving the same common sense?

"Scape" and "goat", because he's Scottish and a non-exotic name.

It's not that at all. He's a professional footballer: should we accept lack of control; poor distribution and a lack of genuine pace from players pulling down a PL wage?

You can talk about 'out of position' all day long, but he can barely do the basics at this level.

Don't be daft lad. We've signed a striker (or at best an attacking midfielder), play him right wing and then moan at him for it, it's just plain stupid.

Let's put it this way, if we'd signed Jelavic and played him right wing, people would immediately point out that he's not playing well because he's playing on the feckin' wing, but because it's Naismith nobody seems to be pointing out the obvious.

This is the highest level of the game and he's being made to look worse than he is. He's not top drawer, but he's a better second striker than he is a winger and that's obvious.

Its not a personal attack on him, but those are my thoughts on him when I've seen him play, wasnt particulary impressed with him against Norwich, but would be willing to be patient with him that position and not pass judgement just yet. But my general thoughts are he is a poor winger, though I agree with you that Moyes probably deserves the blame for those right wing combos rather than Naismith, he doesnt hide, an does offer himself as an option, hes just not a very good option.

Naismith can only be played in a free role in behind a striker because he hasn't got the talent or discipline to do a job elsewhere. It's making a virtue out of a necessity. I'd have Osman or Mirallas in that role way before I'd have him.

I dislike that *position* anyway. It always seems like a square hole you shove a round peg into.

Only because we've never had a square peg to be fair.

Moyesy has said recently that one of the main reason's Naismith's was bought was to get goals. To be fair to him he's looked like scoring most times he's been on the pitch for us, and this is from out wide. Once Mirallas is properly fit we'll hopefully see Felli back in midfield beside Gibson and Naismith in behind Jelavic. It's been pretty obvious so far that Jellavic and Naismith are pretty decent together.
