2023/24 Nathan Patterson

Nathan Patterson didn't "look right" to me yesterday. Don't know if he likes a drink or not
I thought the same looked to be blowing and red faced,
People can’t on the one hand want Everton to have a recruitment policy of developing younger players, and then absolutely berate those players for developing in the first team if they make mistakes.

If there’s a right back in world football that is world class going forward and also world class defensively and has experience then Everton are not going to be able to afford him.

Who is this first choice right back we should buy? At our budget we’d end up with some very average PL right back who might just do a defensive job. There’s very few players in world football who can get up and down the way Evertonians expect their fullbacks to.

We were absolutely blessed with Baines and Coleman but those players don’t come around all the time. We couldn’t afford a modern day Leighton Baines. I remember him making errors as well when he was first in the team.
Could of got Aurier on a free Matt Doherty, 2 off the top of my head to Replace/cover with Coleman while Patterson develops away from the club, Id imagine scouts would have a much broader knowledge on RB or you’d like to think so as the club keep getting things wrong on and off the pitch. At the time of signing him we needed a first team ready RB same goes for Mykolenko as our only LB think we just put LB names into google generator and his come out, both the wrong signings as we needed first team quality neither of them are.

Aurier and Doherty would get absolutely eaten alive by this place. Can you imagine the abuse Thelwell and Dyche would get for signing Matt Doherty? They’re both also not particularly good in a back 4, Doherty in particular is very weak defensively and prefers playing as a wing back.

Scouts from European teams are everywhere now. There’s no a load of world class fullbacks who are perfect in attack and defence just going unnoticed at prices Everton could afford. Even some top clubs don’t all have good options in these positions.

Arsenal played a 50 mill CB at RB all last season, they started with Timber another CB at left back last week. City are playing Ake at LB and have played Stones at RB. Liverpool have a constant issue with Alexander Arnold’s defending. United bought Malacia who still can’t replace Shaw, Wan Bissaka can’t attack. These are the top clubs with unlimited budgets and they still can’t always find fullback solutions.

I’d rather take some mistakes from Patterson and give him an opportunity to become a good player than us waste money on some bang average PL fullback.

I quite like Patterson and think he has potential, however, he hardly touched the ball at all with his left foot yesterday and, on several occasions had to turn 180° rather than drive inside on his left foot, cutting in from the right.

I wouldn't disagree. I don't think Patterson is as awful as some are making out, but am I currently comfortable with either? No.
Mykolenko at least hands in a competent defensive performance on a few occasions.

As disappointing as Mykolenko has been - especially as an attacking threat - there's no comparison between him and Patterson who has offered pretty much nothing as a defensive or creative force.

Let's see what this manager does for the Villa game. If he hands another start to either Maupay or Patterson after that Fulham showing then we'll know he's just being bloody minded.

To me, he looked like he had a bit of a hangover issue at times. Also, in the second half, he appeared to be struggling maybe more than he should have been. I do like Patterson though and would like to see him get a bit of a run in the team. So if you could hold back with your "jihad" that would be brilliant, thanks :D
He was waffling about bulking up in his gym gang (which included the mighty Hercules that is Tom Davies) to increase his strength for PL footy. Some people are made to be scrawny but can still be freakishly strong, he possibly wasn’t strong and tried to compensate with muscle mass. His torso and neck have filled out. Could be that buggering up his stamina. He’s had a full pre season I think so no excuses for a young lad.

But you don’t need to carry an extra stone to mark wingers like Willian, you just need to be a good defender with awareness of where the danger lies, and he got taken to school. Looks to be sprinting around in panic mode when composure needed. That should sort itself out in time. I think he’ll be good with experience, but he’s going to have some shockers getting there.

Having Tarks as RCB next to him would help massively instead of the timid lion from Wizard of Oz.

He's sprinting around because he has zero positional sense of where he should be when the opposition have the ball. That's the reason he's picked up so many injuries too: moving off quickly from standing positions to get over to where the danger is and / or lunging in for a last ditch challenge.

He is ill-equpped for life as a PL FB.

He'll never get those smarts either. You cant coach being alert to danger, you either have that antennae for it or you dont. I once said that about Stones, and it was right then too.

At least we have Keano who is alert to read any dangers or Holgs and Gods as back up. All alert and ready

I think the answer will end up somewhere in the middle. I think it harsh for anyone to say he is utter muck and always will be, he’ll get better. As you say, he did pick up random non impact injuries so his supposed learning season was very disjointed. Him and Coleman basically playing whenever the other was injured, no real transition.

Do agree though on a lot, and I honestly didn’t think we’d be seeing some of the positional errors from him still, then scrambling to re-set. He got hoiked off very quickly in a cup game didn’t he by Lampard after wandering out of position and losing the teams shape. A year on and has that same sense.

I’ve not lost hope yet though. Perhaps foolishly.

He's played well in front of 3 central defenders, not sure he is capable of playing in a back 4 at this level yet. Not good enough defending or attacking. I think he'd be ok as a WB where he has good cover.

I think when Coleman is fit he'll come back in, which is a poor indictment of the club.

Yes, Lampard put Kenny on in the 2nd half and went with a flat back four.

Let's see if Dyche will make the right decisions and not just stick with a player because they want to prove something.

Not true
People learn to avoid danger all the time. Either by being shown or by experiencing the negative

He'll be a better FB come May than he is now imo, provided he doesn't have more bad injuries
We cant be a laboratory for experimenting with players who cant find their feet. We cant afford that - we're in a relegation struggle from day one of this season as far as I'm concerned.
