2023/24 Neal Maupay

The fella literally missed 6 open goals before we loaned him out this season.

That has nothing to do with him not being a number 9 or Everton fans.

You kept receipts didnt you mate, go and abuse him on Instagram with that information. Maybe it'll help.

I agree mate. This thread alone is testament to it.

He played for Brentford in the Championship, and he was never the number 9 at Brighton that we would try him at.

I said repeatedly before we signed him that he was never a number 9. Never in a million years a replacement for Calvert-Lewin - a useful player around a target man.

Anyone with half a footballing brain can see we weren't playing Maupay to his strength.

Basically, this;

He was directly and consistently abused by our fans - a lightning rod for frustration at our situation.

Those who would abuse him and almost take glee in saying how crap he was should reflect on whether that is helpful.

But he did play as a centre forward for Brighton. He was so bad for them that they binned him off and went with Daniel Welbeck and instantly improved and shot up the table.

Just because he’s an utterly garbage number 9 doesn’t mean he isn’t a number 9. He’s never played as a “second striker” ever in his career, our fans were in denial about how bad he was so they invented a position for him. Just like they’ve done with Klaassen, Iwobi, Godfrey and many many others before him.

I remember watching him for Brighton, he missed open goals every single week.

Maybe he was pre-empting the abuse Everton fans were gonna give him 2 years down the line.

Plenty, myself included said repeatedly before he kicked a ball he wasn't a number 9 and how we can't rely on him upfront on his own, and how it would dictate a relegation scrap.

Like so;

I like Maupay but he isn't a number 9.

Our front three is suspect even with Calvert Lewin.

I just don't see us scoring enough to keep us away from a relegation fight.

Negligence from the board.

I'm still hoping Chelsea bringing in Aubameyang and maybe Depay will let them loan Broja.

Maupay was instrumental in a Brighton team who finished above Everton, and he'll play a part in a team who'll finish above us this season.

I'd just like to say he looked tremendous when he played in a 2 with Beto and a shame it wasn't tried more often.

He was playing against Doncaster like but that's beside the point

Erm what? When?!?

This is like saying Phil Neville was instrumental for a United side who won 6 Premier League titles.

What an wanky thing to do when the club still holds your contract. Cant see the club he now loves being at even wanting him? They might be awash with money to spend soon and will need a genuine number 9, and probably have plenty of change. A week before be scored weren’t they all laughing at him for missing a sitter?

No ill will to him when he was here. It was just a terrible terrible fit from the start. All parties to blame. Don’t care where he has or hasn’t played, the fact his best position/role still gets debated by fans says it all. It should be blindingly obvious at this stage in his career, no ifs or buts. But it’s still too nuanced.

He can be player Z in next years mitigating P&S breach circumstances for lowering his sale value by saying everyone was mean.

He got the most stick I can ever recall any Everton player getting, ever.

Was he crap? Yes
Did he underperform? Yes
Did he have some mitigating factors - around Everton setting him up to fail by trying him as a number 9 when he's never that? Yes
Did fans help or hinder him? Hinder. No question.
Really, you sure?

Good sir, Alex Nyarko & Michael Keane would like a word.
