2023/24 Neal Maupay

Erm what? When?!?

This is like saying Phil Neville was instrumental for a United side who won 6 Premier League titles.

Did Phil Neville score or directly contribute a third of United's goals? That was Maupay at Brighton over 3 years - in a team that finished 9th when we were finishing 16th. Every season he was at Brighton, he scored more than our highest goalscorer last season;

Here's what I shared in August;

Reasons why I think at £15m he'd be a good, pragmatic signing.

- Brighton wanted to keep him. He wouldn't renew. He's been an important player for them and still would be if he wanted to stay.
- He's only available, and for a good price because he's in the last year of his deal. From January, he can open talks with any foreign club about a free transfer.
- League goals - 10 in 37, 8 in 33, 8 in 35. Their top goal scorer in those 3 seasons. Over those 3 years, he's contributed a third of their goals.
- Compare how he'd rank at 10, 8 and 8 in an Everton team the past 3 years.
- He's 25, he hit double figures (ok, 10 league goals) in his debut season as a 21/22 year old for Brighton.
- It sounds daft, but he tends to score goals that matter. It's not like he slots 3 in a 4-0 win to bump up his numbers - 'Take away the nine he netted in 2021-22 and Brighton’s record-breaking ninth place finish becomes 14th spot in the table. Maupay was single-handedly worth seven points last season.'
- He has a very good fitness record.
- People like to say 'Brighton create loads of chances, Maupay misses loads' - he has a better conversion rate than most, including Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.
- He's low risk in that he's 'proven' in the Prem, young enough to do a few years and sell for profit.
- Playing style. He's a bit street footballer - he brings energy, tenacity and some snide. He's a bit of an angry ant - he can't play upfront on his tod, but he creates space for those around him. Evertonians tend to like that type of player.
- Long term target so it's not a knee jerk panic - we were linked last summer but had no chance because Brighton wouldn't sell;

When asked about the Frenchman, Potter told reporters: “He’s been important since he’s been here.
“It tells you by the amount of games he’s played for us, the amount of time he’s been on the pitch.
“He’s a player that’s developing all the time. He’s not perfect, but he has a lot of really good attributes and qualities that the team appreciates.
“We’re pleased for him that he scored two goals in his first two games. There’s a lot of work which goes on outside that which is important for us as a team.
“We’re pleased with the start he’s had and hopefully he can continue.

He'd be a very useful player and for £15m, all day.

It would be double that, and I doubt Brighton would sell if he had 4 years on his contract.

So then... again;

Was he crap? Yes
Did he underperform? Yes
Did he have some mitigating factors - around Everton setting him up to fail by trying him as a number 9 when he's never that? Yes
Did fans help or hinder him? Hinder. No question.

Dwight McNeil had the early knives out for him too - fortunately, he found some form - mainly thanks to Dyche coming in and knowing what player he is. Maupay was never a number 9, and never ever a Dyche player.

Hands down the funniest thing on this forum, is when someone went all in on a new signing and they just cannot for the life of them, no matter how much evidence is put in front of them, come to terms with the fact that they were just wrong and the player completely stinks. The twisting and contorting is uncomfortable to watch.
Mo Besic WAS the best player we have ever signed tho.

Thats a fact.

Thats fine and you are very entitled to your opinion, but I personally feel its very wrong.

If only we had a metric we could use, you know, like goals scored for Everton and his current side, Brentford.

Go and tell every manager he’s ever had before that he’s never been a number 9 mate, you clearly know better than all of them.

Really, you sure?

Good sir, Alex Nyarko & Michael Keane would like a word.

I have eyes over most digital platforms for Everton. GOT has the clubs biggest facebook fan page, twitter etc - and Maupay has got more abuse, actual abuse than any other Everton player.

Does it help or hinder players for fans to abuse them?

Bet Tom Davies was top 3.

Still love you Tom 💙

If only he could have scored what he has done every other season he's had in the Prem for us, we'd have been safe long before Bournemouth.

What an wanky thing to do when the club still holds your contract. Cant see the club he now loves being at even wanting him? They might be awash with money to spend soon and will need a genuine number 9, and probably have plenty of change. A week before be scored weren’t they all laughing at him for missing a sitter?

No ill will to him when he was here. It was just a terrible terrible fit from the start. All parties to blame. Don’t care where he has or hasn’t played, the fact his best position/role still gets debated by fans says it all. It should be blindingly obvious at this stage in his career, no ifs or buts. But it’s still too nuanced.

He can be player Z in next years mitigating P&S breach circumstances for lowering his sale value by saying everyone was mean.

He'd be a moron to come back here mate because he'd never get a kick, and rightly so in a Dyche team.
