Such an eye opening topic. I’d make this a sticky as it both informs those who need informing (which is clearly a lot hence the ignorance on display) and also exposes those who are complicit in attempting to whitewash history. Besides books and newspapers, I’ve learned more about the history of hooliganism and racism from other Everton websites/forums (one of which I’ve linked in a previous post) than this one, which I have to say is disappointing. Much more could be done on here.
That Dave Prentice article in the Echo that covers the Jack Charlton quote from his autobiography that calls the Everton crowd in the 1960s “the worst before which I have ever played” is one of (if not the earliest) mentions of hooliganism in English football that I’ve come across, ie. long before the County Road Cutters appeared on the scene. The Prentice article on the 1960s states:
“There was also the reputation of the hooligan element amongst the Everton supporters. Gavin quotes John Moynihan in
The Soccer Syndrome, describing a stroll around the Goodison Park touchline on a perfect summer's day. "Walking behind the infamous goal, where they built a barrier to stop objects crunching into visiting goalkeepers," he wrote, "There was a strange feeling of hostility remaining as if the regulars had never left."
The
News of the World’s Bob Pennington spoke of the "lunatic fringe of support that fastens onto them (Everton), seeking identification in a multi-national port where roots are hard to establish." The same newspaper later described Everton supporters as the "roughest, rowdiest rabble who watches British soccer."
That nugget of historical trivia is just one chiselled from the archives by Gavin Buckland in his memorable chronicle of Everton in the 1960s "Money Can't Buy Us Love."

Those who whitewash history cannot move forward. They harbour toxic views. Going off topic here but this applies to any issue. Yesterday Tom Hanks called on America to stop whitewashing history. Eight slave owning presidents (one of whom is jefferson, the “monster of Monticello”), Natives labelled subhuman (“savages”) in the declaration, ethnic cleansing with Natives removed and put in cages (an act Hitler would quote), racial segregation, white only vote, white only citizenship, white only marriage, white only schools, graveyards etc.... ultimately 400 years of tyranny towards traumatised non white people on that landmass. “Presidents Day”...imagine marking that. Tyrants on currency, statues etc (English people showed the way of the future last year by removing a statue of a slave trader (Edward Colston) before it was dumped into Bristol Harbour). There will never be a “post racial America” until they face up to their history and humble themselves. Trump was just one person, an easy scapegoat, as tens of millions support him and a few months ago thousands stormed the US Capitol (another building built by slaves). Lack of honesty or accepting wrongs equals zero humility, as a result the race issue there is as strong as ever. Read a book by an esteemed US professor on the contrast in tolerance between America and Germany. As the Germans have never covered up their history and confront it with honesty just 80 years after the holocaust Germany is often ranked the world’s most popular and welcoming country in polls (including two BBC polls). The Germans display an integrity that is a lesson for everyone.
