New Everton Stadium

Quite happy with the news, not with 52, but a possibility of 62 is a lot better than the latest set of rumours which were 55,000 at most. The thing I don't understand is, Meis said there'd be no chance to expand, so what's changed?

Didn't Dan Mies say there's no chance to expand in the future due to the site, once the stadium is built ... it's built. They were his words out his own mouth and that was less than 6 months ago.

Now all of a sudden we can build a 52k stadium with the option to increase to 62k? An extra 10k is near enough a whole new stand ... on a site which there no chance of expanding on not so long ago.

Just find it strange how he was adamant there was no chance of expanding on the site, but all of a sudden now there is.

Safe standing will be ratio 1:1 so they can't even use that excuse.
I can only assume he was originally talking about a 62k stadia.

And now its 52k with a 10k Upgrade.

His initial prognosis still stands though. Once the site has been built on then there will be virtually no access around the stadium for increased footprint. It does not make any sense building a brand new stadium with a view of increasing it.

I fact I've never heard such crap.

Am actual football stadium, not an athletics one that needed refurbishing ala City and wham, being designed smaller than need be but with a view of extending.

Think I've just figured it out.

Moshiri is only wanting to pay the bare minimum and is passing on a future cost to whoever he sells to.

Clever that

I actually think we are marks here by the club. The final capacity will be 55k IMO and the club are already planing it.

Here’s the hustle,

Announce a 52k stadium.

Have divided opinions,

Have a fan consultation,

Overwhelming feedback for 60k.

Club make big show about listening to fans and taking on board their opinions,

Announce a 55k after listening to fans.

Everyone is happy.
Maybe, yes. They leave room for that slightly higher figure by returning to the issue in the second consultation.

1. was my first thought: the club making a necessary statement of reality re: the difficulties of maximizing size in such a location.

I am hoping, possibly naively, that 2. would be too outrageous a stunt for the club to pull on their own fans. If they couldn't go ahead with BMD I'd hope that the club would just announce it and rule it out in a straightforward manner. But as I say hoping!

If it is "2" then they'd want to make sure they aren't seen to be incompetent...again. They'd run a mile from being as decisive and honest as that.

...that's if it is a staged retreat.

I think Moshiri wants to spend as little as possible, hence 52k now

The cost of redeveloping to 62k will be passed on to whoever owns us In ten years time.

My overwhelming feeling is still that this is an uphill struggle to secure funds - regardless of capacity.

If the funds are secured, Moshiri's game will just be to add value to his investment. He wont give a toss about 52k versus 62k. Iconic stadium design + location on WHS = big profit on sale.

The price on those last 10000 seats is not inconsequential..

I find it mad that a global mega club like Juventus built a new stadium with a 41,000 capacity. Apparently they only got 25,000 through the gate at their old gaff.

I dunno, maybe 52,000 is right for us. City struggle to fill their ground regularly and they probably play the best footy in the world. Is there really gonna be enough extra match going fans to warrant a further 10,000 seats? We're not Liverpool, we haven't got that UK wide and global 'happy clappy' fan base and would we even want it?
