New Everton Stadium

– delivering what Everton FC refer to as “the Vision” requires in excess of £300m which Everton cannot yet show that they – or anyone else – have available.
– there is no regeneration scheme in place.
– there is no developer in place.
– there is no planning application.

That tells us what we all already knew. Nothing is going forward because we can't put together the financing despite what Elstone is saying about our relationship with the banks and the added revenue from the TV deal and nobody from inside the club is planning to contribute either.

Its disgusting that tottenham can hold haringey council to ransom, whilst shipping all profits abroad to a tax haven and we get ridiculed for a much less offensive and aggressive plan.

Everton FC and Walton Hall Park Project – statement from the Mayor of Liverpool
November 24, 2015

There have been a lot of media reports today following the information presented to the Everton FC AGM last night.

I was disappointed that people were left with the impression that the council and other partners were not fully in support or part of a true partnership. I don’t recognise that view.

As Mayor of the city, I wish to set straight some of the issues which were not communicated to last night’s meeting.

Many people would love to see a new stadium, new housing, a better park and new community facilities at Walton Hall Park. Some would prefer the park to remain the way it currently is. All of which are things to consider but the facts are that:

– delivering what Everton FC refer to as “the Vision” requires in excess of £300m which Everton cannot yet show that they – or anyone else – have available.
– there is no regeneration scheme in place.
– there is no developer in place.
– there is no planning application.

Once these are in place, of course we will support, facilitate and work together to move the project forward, in the same way that we did with Liverpool FC for their recent the Anfield stadium expansion.

Some people seem to be forgetting that it is not the job of the council to finance and deliver a major regeneration scheme of the type proposed, including a potential new stadium for Everton Football Club. Nobody should be in any doubt about the horrendous financial situation that the council is facing.

Let me re-iterate, we would welcome a regeneration scheme to consider but the fact is, at the moment, there isn’t one. That is why there is no real progress to report.

It is sad that Everton FC chose to question mine and the Council’s integrity and commitment publicly. As a city we have helped Everton with Finch Farm and took the controversial decision to support a regeneration project with a stadium on Walton Hall Park. The evidence of our commitment to supporting Everton is there for all to see.

As Mayor I am totally committed to helping, within reason, this project if it meets the wider regeneration needs of the area or indeed any other solution the club may propose.

I await sight of those plans.

Joe Anderson – Mayor of Liverpool

I love the smell of stagnation in the afternoon...

Why is there no regeneration scheme in place? When Joe Anderson said it was the council side of the deal to sort this out?

The council is going to put some money in and that will be around regeneration, not directly into the football club or stadium without getting a financial or commercial return.

They even had a developer lined up according to the echo

The development would be expected to include 1,000 new homes, built by Liverpool Mutual Homes, as well as 30,000 square metres of leisure, retail and restaurant space.

Liverpool council has made it clear that any investment it makes will be in the regeneration aspect of the project.

So whys it now Evertons responsibility and not as originally stated the councils side of this partnership?

The GAA, an AMATEUR sporting association in Ireland re-developed an 82,000 capacity stadium in Dublin, on a restricted urban site between two railway lines and a canal.
The stadium is only full 3/4 times a year.
The corporate side on non match days generates a constant revenue stream for them.

If they can do it....

There is no debate clearly taking place.
There is nothing happening from either party to move this potential scheme forward evidently unless everyone is telling fibs.
Nothing to see here, time to lock thread unless something develops?

I for one dont want anything that resembles the Emirates I want to watch the boys in an atmospheric place not a souless bowl .We need a proper football groung NSNO.
I was suggesting more along the lines of their standard and premium hospitality rather than the overall atmosphere of the stadium.

I like watching football, but I also like a pie and a pint. Unfortunately where I sit (in the Streeet End) I have to choose one or the other. Not both.

Waiting until half time means you have to endure a horrifically long queue; then the selection is dire. Don't forget the whole obstructed views...

Then there is the additional revenue available from corporate or premium hospitality: not particularly to my taste but I appreciate the benefits.

Basically, I love Goodison and I particularly love the atmosphere we can make. I also love the almost uniqueness of our surroundings.

However in the long term should that be to the detriment of the club? We need to move with the times...

This statement from the Mayor means Walton Hall Park is stone cold dead.

The two parties are miles apart - and mudslinging to boot. There's no way back from this in the short or medium term. That effectively kills it.

Just start redeveloping Goodison. It won't cost £300 million and there's no rush. It can be achieved piecemeal over years and years with steadily increasing gains. You might even enjoy it.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. I'm pretty sure there would have been funds coming from all quarters to make a National stadium happen for a National sport.

This would involve the board having to spend actual money on something, and would also add little value to their end goal of selling their shares at a vast profit.

The GAA started on their own developing the stadium. They didn't wait for help or go with a begging bowl.
They only got the grant of €20 million after the stadium was finished, which helped them pay off the remaining debts early.
The GAA would have paid it all off anyway themselves.
An amateur sporting organisation in a small country with limited big games in the stadium.
