New Stadium- How to size it?

Might be that by quoting 50k and 300 million makes it more palatable to the council cabinet and joe public, then when it's about to be built suddenly it goes to 70k and 500 million!!

Well i can dream can't I! :)

Ha! I did hear a suggestion on TPF they just lifted and shifted the WHP spec purely for ease of process. Dunno if true but may explain the dodgy figure

I'm just hoping the 50k is only used to get over the council in that meeting in the coming weeks, once that's been rubber stamped that's when the club will properly look at lenders and then look at the cost of the design and capacity I would imagine.

I bloody hope so anyway 50k is too small. I really hope the designs are boss aswell, I want something blue and modern!

Agree. Selling out the Burnley game a month in advance shows the demand at the moment. And whilst this season has been a vast improvement on the previous 2, it's still likely only to be a 7th placed finish and another trophyless season.

I would be very disappointed for us to go from around the 9th or 10th biggest Stadium in the country to only the 8th by jumping above Villa and Sunderland, but behind Newcastle. A lot of the good newish Stadiums start around the 54,000 mark (Borussia Park, the Etihad) so would be hoping for 54-55,000 as a starting point if they don't think 60,000 is sensible at this moment in time. There has to be the option for expansion too though.

50k would scream of the club doing their best to do it on the cheap. What's 5k extra about £25/30 million? Totally worth it I hope we go for £55/56k

When has capacity determined ambition by the way? Juve only have 40k in their Stadium and i bet no player has went 'EY ACTUALLY ILL SIGN FOR NEWCASTLE COZ DEY HAVE 52k STADIUM AND JUVE ONLY HAVE 40k, WHERZ DA AMBISHUN?!'

Its kind of missing the point. If we were the best and most successful team in the country then the stadium size wouldn't be an issue, TV rights, Champions League money, sponsorship, all account for more than the gate income nowadays.

The only way we can generate extra cash to break into the Champions League that will then give us more worldwide attention to get bigger sponsorship deals, to win more trophies is to have the largest stadium possible. (that we can fill anyhow)

Juventus and other Italian clubs have been struggling for years with crowds due to the economy and violence at the games, it was sensible for them to downsize.

As for St. James park, I bet that was the difference a few times when Newcastle got players we were also after.

For whatever reason I've always had in mind 65000, with 5000 corporate seats leaving 60000 for your 'standard' home and away seats.

50-55000 might sound about right as we are now, but if moshiri is ambitious as we're led to believe, I'm hoping (and I'm sure he is too) that by the time we move in we'll be regularly challenging for champions league and maybe more. In 4/5 years time we could well be in a position where 65000 will be regularly filled

I was concerned reading the 50,000 figure yesterday but various things have been said that make me think it will be more like 55,000-60,000. Just my own opinion though and conclusions I have jumped to.

Dave Downey (I think it was him) had been interviewing Joe Anderson and was asked afterwards what size he thought it would/should be and said 60,000. That could have been his own opinion but you'd have thought he'd have discussed that off camera with Anderson and if that was a deluded estimate Downey wouldn't have said 60,000.

The Kings Dock back in 2003 was due to be 55,000 and that was under Kenwright. We know Moshiri is ambitious and wants us to compete with the other 3 Huge NW clubs (said so with his Koeman/Hollywood comments). So why would he settle for 5,000 less seats now when around 03 and 04 we were averaging 38,000 as we have the past 2 seasons. However this season we're set to average over 39,000 with every game sold out, which was never the case back in 03.

Slightly less convincing is my own belief that despite leading people on too much last summer, the Esk does know certain things (called the 5pm announcment and media leading stories from 1pm the day before), and him and various other people have suggested 60,000+. I think 70,000 is far fetched though which I am sure he mentioned.

Of those 3 though, I think the second point is the most reassuring and would make no sense now that Moshiri is involved. Building a 50,000 seater would also not really push us on at all other than the iconic location. It would put us on a similar level to Sunderland and Newcastle and not Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea who are clubs we need to be competing with if we are break in to the top 6.

Capacity will be determined by LCC Health and Safety Exec, Merseyside Police and other blue light services I would have thought. Isn't that the reason The Emirates and the new Whitehart Lane stadiums are what they are. Inner city stadia will always have a reduced capacity because of the difficulty of dealing with a Major Incident. Getting 60000 people away from an area that has a major river on one side (And other waterways - possibly) will be seen as a logistical nightmare. Look at Wembley, our National stadium, what capacity is it, 80 something thousand!
