It really needs to be someone in his prime. I wanted it to be Digne or Pickford (hey, he was playing well enough at that point) when Jagielka left because I figured those two were likely to be a part of our best side for the foreseeable future. I still would like to see that so for me the options are basically DCL or Holgate. Personally though I'm still not sure how automatic of a selection Holgate will be in the coming years and as Dom might be about to win a golden boot I think he's who I'd go for.

That said I'm not for taking it off Coleman until he leaves the club and as he still has a contract until June 2022 a lot could change. As it has since I wanted Pickford to be captain lol.

For me a captain is someone who can inspire, rally the troops and also someone who is respected by the whole team. They need to be able to communicate to all personalities from the extroverts to the introverts, not just be the guy with the loudest voice and the moodiest face. As an introvert myself, the best captains got the best from me by encouraging rather than shouting. Therefore on the basis of the current squad there’s only a very few who tick all criteria and that’s DCL, Allan and at a push Keane. These guys don’t sulk or moan, can be seen trying to encourage and above all you know the other players would listen to them.
Personally I think the club captain is more as much a ceremonial role as anything these days. The players know who the leaders are whether they've got a strap on their arm or not. And shithousing the ref is a team effort so it isn't about picking the right captain for it as it is creating a culture of shithousery. All the great teams at this part of the game operate in that way.
