Ahh I'd love to see that but it seems so far off. I don't think this group of players have it in them to improve that much in such a short space of time, that'd mean us winning more or less every game. This is a very poor team.

A poor team indeed, Mike.

But we are swimming in a sea of poor teams....we won’t have to win every game, just the majority.

The rest of that dross will keep taking points of each other ;)

If they let it drift until after the palace game then it just smacks of incompetence to me, the players & staff need to know one way or the other.

I imagine it will be Unsworth now in any case come what may.

He will have my full support, certainly the biggest challenge he will perhaps ever face in football. If he can get some results in the next few games by hook or by crook then it will be hugely signficant. That's based on hope rather than expectation but if the players are told he he is there for the remainder of the season then it may help to focus minds all round.

I am nervous about our prospects but perhaps the win on Sunday and spat with Schneiderlin/Mirallas may have somehow galvanised the squad together. There is no denying the issues on the field but I think its more dogs of war attitude that's required now than school of science. Too often I find the players wanting in attitude and effort.

They may still withhold an announcement for some time but I do think both Unsworth himself would benefit from some certainty in particular.

It would be interesting to see if indeed he is still manager in January what support he is given in the transfer market and what issues he might face with any personal credibility/awareness/pull in attracting players. If it comes to the worst over the next 4-5 games they may make a change then.

Walsh is still the elephant in the room that has not been dealt with either.

This would be my biggest concern, that his lack of experience / standing etc puts off prospective signings.

Not really mate. We are only 4 points off 8th place. Of our next 8 games 7 are in the bottom 11 and 4 are actually below us in the league. Plus the teams around us have harder fixture lists than ours. Reckon it would only take 4/5 wins and a draw or 2 to see us in 8th as @Khalekan suggests. Don't think it would take a huge turn around in form/performance given the quality of the opposition we are playing.

Yeah I know that mate. Just explaining that my optimism was more to do with the fixture list than a huge turnaround in performance or fortune. Even if we were in or around 8th on, say 25 points come the end of the year, that is still a huge disappointment on where we'd expected to be at the start of the season. We would be at least 10 points behind 6th and, apart from the FA Cup, our season would be over.
So you see around 14 points from the next 8 games as I see at best 5 but only time will tell.

All about opinions mate and in my opinion my optimism is not that far fetched. I'm not saying we're within a million miles of the top 6. Neither am I saying we're suddenly going to start playing fantastic football, hammering all comers 4-0.

My optimism is based on Unsworth having a very tricky start to his tenure and having very little time in the training ground yet to work on our defensive frailties. My optimism is based on our being just 4 points behind 8th place, having had a more difficult fixture list so far than those around us, including 8 of the top 9 in the league. My optimism is based on having an easier fixture list over the next 8 games, including 7 games against the bottom 11 sides, 4 of which are actually below us in the league and therefore, presumably, in worse form than us.

At the moment the top 6 are out on their own and the likes of Burnley and Watford also showing well. Apart from that teams aren't doing or playing any better than us. We need to only gain 8 points more than West Ham (who have an absolutely stinker fixture list) to be 10 points clear of relegation at the end of the year. I can easily see us getting 4/5 wins and a draw or 2 out of that fixture list.

To a degree I can understand your pessimism, but I think you are putting too much emphasis on our own form and disregarding how badly other teams are playing.

As an outsider (albeit with a vested interest), I'd go along with the "optimistic" view that Everton can climb the table in the next 10 games up until the New Year.

Apart from the fixtures against your deadly rivals and Chelsea, the other EIGHT fixtures are ones Everton would usually be confident of picking up points and a couple of clubs Newcastle (14 points) and Southampton (13 points) have a particularly "nasty" run of fixtures - SIX of the Saints' next 10 fixtures are against "Top Six" teams - 5 of them away from home. Newcastle have 4 of the next 10 against "The Top Six" as do West Brom.

Even with SU temporarily in charge, I can easily see Everton being above both Newcastle and Saints by January 1 - and probably several others including Burnley (19 points) Eighth-placed Brighton are only 3 points ahead of you as it stands, but they are playing with confidence.

But we've only won 3 games all season, I'm struggling to see how we're going to get 5 in 6 weeks with the same group of players, especially when you factor in the fisting we're receiving at Anfield.

This.
Got a bit spawny with two of those wins as well.
No way I'm watching us at Anfield either. Three at the back nailed on, and the mother of all bummings.
