we have now witness the age of counter Attack renaissance in Football across Europe.

The teams that master this perfectly will see incredible achievement in the league. Old fashion keep ball will never work and will be difficult to implement if we do not have world class players in our disposal.
There are enough evidents during the last 3 years that unless we are playing against team that are hugely inferior, keeping possession will hardly work.

Arsenal, man city, Man U all struggle massively with these approach while quick and compact teams like Southampton,Spurs and Leicester moves up the league with ease.

Pellegrini and de boer are both going to be massive flop.

Some of those players are great, some not so much. He was never going to replace a Suarez or an Eriksen with a like-for-like player so how can he improve on his expectations (win the league, go far in Europe) with a squad that gets poached every year? It sounds like some of you are just purposely trying to make a manager sound really bad. He lost the league this season on the last day he didn't lose it like a month before the end of the season.
Of course it's damn hard mate, that's just the nature of the Ererdivise mate. Feyenoord, PSV and everyone else in the league lose their best players each season.

I have a question for those championing FDB. Do you realise that he'll play the philosophy of possession type football that Martinez did? How do you feel about 3 more years of that and how do you think players like Baines will? I can't believe he'd have such support if more people knew his style. I was initially enthusiastic but after much research I've now gotten to the point I'd happily take Moyes back to avoid FDB. Below is an excerpt from the latest article on him by the Echo and a vid for a visual representation of what to expect.

"Bart Hinke writes for Dutch national newspaper NRC Handelsblad and having covered de Boer during his time at Ajax, believes that their recently-departed coach has so far been more rigid in his approach than his more experienced countryman.

Hinke said: “When de Boer was talking about a sabbatical it was a realistic option that he would travel the world and talk to great football men to try and reinvent himself as a manager because he must sense his style of play has been a bit too robotic at times.

“His game is very much based on possession football and passing so if what we hear about Everton over the past couple of years is true then I guess Frank de Boer is like a Dutch version of Martinez.”

No cup of cheer
Evertonians might be forgiven for breaking out in a cold sweat following that last sentence but given that success in a cup competition arguably remains the Blues most viable route to success, to make matters worse, there is the thorny issue of de Boer's blank cabinet when it comes to knockout trophies although there seems to be somewhat mitigating circumstances over his supposedly unimpressive CV in continental combat.

Hinke said: “De Boer did not win any Dutch Cups, just one Johan Cruyff Shield [the Dutch equivalent of the Community Shield].

“He hasn't won any silverware in the past two years which was a disappointing end to his career at Ajax even though in his last season he ended up getting the most points in his tenure. They finished second to PSV Eindhoven after failing to win at De Graafschap on the last day which was a great cock up.”"

For me the problem with Martinez wasn't the idea of possession based football. It was the fact that he couldn't or wouldn't organise a defence.
Not many blues were complaining when we were playing arsenal off the pitch at the Emirates in his first season or snotting them at Goodison.
If De Boer can organise a defence, I am perfectly happy for us to play possession football.

That clip of the Ajax goal is funny actually. They play it round the back and centre for a bit. try the left wing then the right wing and have to go back again. Then a defender gets bored and launches it. That's not total football in my book.

Their board looked at the bigger picture - what he achieved before Greece - not just his last year.

That is exactly what Im encouraging here.
That's why if Mourinho is not on the table any longer, the best option available would probably be Emery. In my opinion.
Has found consistent success in Spain and Europe with massive financial constraints.

Followed in quick succession by Pellegrini.

To me we should be looking at managers who have outperformed consistently at their clubs over their managerial career. Emery falls into that category, Favre, Pellegrini and I think De Boer do as well.

You can rule out 90% of managers in the world if you don't want to see goals like that; it's how most teams play/try to play now thanks to the old Barcelona.
Every team will have a similar passage of play to this multiple times throughout a season and a small number of them will lead to goals but that's not my point. My point is that a possession based style will lead to similar play far more frequently such as we've seen for the last 3 years.

This is a painful wait - think Ill have to go and start slamming little billytoffee in a door frame to take my mind off it.

Simply haven't got a clue who should get the job now.

I have serious question marks over De Boer.
I've watched Ajax in the Europa League, over a couple years and they were a dreadful side.

4 in a row by all means is not to be sniffed at but he has been knocked off his perch by Cocu at PSV the last two years.

What's Hiddink up to next, he's done well on both stints in the PL for Chelsea, won six Dutch League titles and four Dutch Cups for PSV, managed all over the world and has great contacts for attracting players...

This really. I can't fathom why people would prefer De Boer to Pellegrini. I'd be delighted with him or Emery, two managers who have had success in competitive leagues.

We shouldn't be overly concerned with entirely adopting a system that's 'fashionable' - whilst I agree with your assessment of what makes those teams successful, I can't help but think that if fans have noticed this then professional football managers will have too.

Whilst Everton suffered an obvious deterioration defensively, we were also sussed out in '14/'15 because we didn't adapt our style whatsoever - teams knew what to expect. I'd much rather the new manager had ideas of how to play with the excellent core of a squad we currently have, and play to their utmost strength whilst he phases in whatever ideas he has - I'd love for Everton to be a template of a successful style of football.

De Boer would be much of a muchness as Martinez. Stylistically v. similar too. I found watching us against Norwich refreshing, that was the best we've played in a while, and we were much more direct, quicker and interesting to watch.
Think we need to look for an experienced winner, and De Boer isn't that.
