Everton are due to hold talks this week with Unai Emery with the Sevilla coach a leading contender to replace Roberto Martinez as manager at Goodison Park.

Emery led Sevilla to a third successive Europa League title on Wednesday when the Spanish club beat Everton's fierce Merseyside rivals, Liverpool, 3-1 in Switzerland.

Sevilla missed the opportunity to end the season on another high when they were beaten 2-0 by Barcelona after extra time in the final of the Copa del Rey at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid last night (sun). But Emery's impressive achievements have won considerable admiration among the Everton hierarchy as they search for a new manager to take the club forward after a bitterly disappointing season under Martinez, who was sacked a fortnight ago.

Everton are expecting to meet with Emery in the next 72 hours. It is unclear if the Spaniard is the club's first choice but they are keen to establish his interest in moving to England and any plans he has.

Ronald Koeman, the Southampton manager, and Frank De Boer, who is a free agent after leaving Ajax this month, have also been heavily linked with the job. The outgoing Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is available, too.

Ronald De Boer has already spoken of his brother's desire to join Everton.

Emery has a reputation for being an intense workaholic but he is popular among his players and West Ham United were interested in appointing him before Slaven Bilic succeeded Sam Allardyce in east London.

He has spoken in the past of being interested in working in the Premier League and can converse in English.

Everton finished the season in 11th, 19 points adrift of fourth place, and were beaten in the League Cup semi-final by Manchester City and FA Cup semi-final by Manchester United.

The Merseyside club won just two of their final 11 league games under Martinez and face a battle to keep defender John Stones, midfielder Ross Barkley and striker Romelu Lukaku this summer.

My pick would be Andre Villas Boas.
  • Killed it at Porto when he was younger then some of the players.
  • Took on Chelsea when he was way too young, only 33 and the ego's in the dressing room undermined him.
  • Bounced back with Spurs, lead them to 72pts in a season, before losing Bale and had to rebuild.
  • Has done very well with Zenit.
Still only 39. Available and free. Chelsea had paid £15M for his release from Porto back in the day.

The ego's........ seem to be the problem these days.Sad but true.Cap the wages worldwide.

Honestly though, last season when we had nowhere near the ambition have now if we'd have mentioned Koeman you all would have huffed.

Now we have the massive ambition and Koeman is flavour of the month owing to a pretty good half of the season you're all creaming your kecks.

Ridiculous.
To be fair to Bill he's probably at least 30 times poorer than Farhad. If we'd have mentioned Koeman to Koeman last season he'd have huffed. The reason he doesn't now is simple: ambition (£££).
