sure, he did well at rangers but I don't remember anyone going 'holy crap, Everton have managed to land Walter Smith as their boss, they must mean business'

Rangers! Took over Souness team in a two horse race, though he did win a lot of trophies so if that equates to successful European manager I guess you are right.

Depends if the kids are good enough. Pellegrini and Jose were at clubs who demanded success now and they couldnt afford to develop younger players so the easier approach is to buy ready made players in their peak.
