Because up until relatively recently, all players wore thigh and knee pads. These were held in place by a combination of small mesh pockets inside the garment, and the garment being tight enough to press the pad against the leg. The rule making these thigh and knee pads mandatory has I think been relaxed.

The first time I got hit with a cut block (used to play as a defensive end at university), I was very, very glad of my knee pads.

Okay - get that thanks mate.

Next Quessie is how much does this thing cost to play?

It looks like you need a LOT of money to buy all this gear. Whats the start up cost for a kid wanting to play Americano Footy?

If they were wearing something baggy it would make them easier to tackle

Then why not just wear tight shorts?

Brand new gear would be cost prohibitive. When I was playing ten years ago, a helmet alone could cost £200.

Most teams in the UK back then had a supply of club equipment that people could borrow for their first season, to see if they enjoyed the game enough to stay on. I did, and in my second year I started buying second-hand equipment from people who were either giving up the sport when they left uni or were too old to play anymore (senior league rather than uni league, obviously).

From memory my shoulder pads were £40 second hand, and I think I paid about £60 for my hat, also second hand.

So any young kids wanting to play you're looking at at least $1000?

My Lord.

No, I would doubt that very much. A young kid wanting to play in a youth team over here would be using team-owned equipment for the first year at least. If thye bought new pads and a new helmet the following year I would guesstimate they'd be paying about £350, which I think is just under 650 aussie dollars. Bear in mind some people pay over £100 in the UK for football boots, and it's suddenly not quite so extortionate!

You're mixing up NFL and Rugby League there pal :D

Years ago, an old boss of mine was a semi professional Rugby league player. For a wool he was alright, a few times I went training with him at his team.

Anyway, we went for a drink with some of the coaches, one of them had his 15 year old lad playing at St Helens for the youth team. He was supplying him steds because " They are all at it "
