Not the first time Goodell and Co. have cocked up. Rice gets two games for sparking his fiancee -- as was noted earlier, the league didn't have to see the punch, the video of Rice dragging her out of the elevator unconscious, plus the domestic violence charges, should have been enough to put 2 and 2 together -- and Josh Gordon of the Browns gets a year for marijuana? Something that is definitely not an performance-enhancing drug and can actually help with the chronic pain a football player can have to cope with? Talk about skewed.
And as a Saints fan, don't get me started on Bountygate. The penalties there were way OTT in a game where plays happen at a speed that makes it nearly impossible to think, 'Oh, here's my chance to put so-and-so on injured reserve.'
Very well put. Especially with the actions of former players murdering their wives, girlfriends (Rae Carruth, that Chiefs player, etc.) you would hope they would draw a much stronger line with all issues of domestic violence.

Several players have argued that they can't handle the post-game pain without the aid of a little (lot of) cannabis

Dont get me wrong, its an utter joke, some fella, I dont know the story, so forgive me, but I assume some fella knocks his missus out and is banned for 2 games, whilst somebody else has a little puff, puff and is banned for a year??

LOL

The drug suspension policy is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, so Gordon's suspension is automatic (not his first time to fail a drug test, so the punishment is larger). The NFL and NFLPA (players' union) are bound to the CBA unless/until it is amended. Rice's situation (punches fiancee) is much more serious, no doubt, but there are no formal rules between NFL and NFLPA on this. More importantly, this is subject to criminal prosecution (she did not press charges) and the NFL has sadly let players get away with more before (see above; also, criminal prosecution not NFL's responsibility).

It's sad to think they might need to put such in the CBA

Why does one have to be better? Why choose at all? I love rugby and US football (college, not really NFL)

Because one is virtuous and a fair sport played by tough gentlemen and the other is an abomination played by drug fuelled shithouses who shoot innocent people while high on steroids.

We need to protect the general public by promoting rugby and condoning American Football.

Why do the sporting bodies (not just NFL obvs) even test for cannabis?

I remember some snooker player being banned for it ffs.
