Non League Football

Widnes just beat Prescot Cables 4-2 to go within 2 points of a playoff place with 3 games to go @barneygumble

Some clubs who have played a lot higher in that league. Northwich/Hednesford/Stalybridge/Runcorn and Leek all Conference regulars at one time.
I assume Runcorn Linnets are the newer version of the old team?
I remember them playing Welling in the late 80s and asking my dad if all northern players had moustaches. 😀

All sorts of financial issues for all of those clubs; which would make the more sense now.

Northwich by large is just a mess for Football. The town isn't sustainable for 2 football clubs, but if you include Winsford United (who also have 2 sides) you've got 4 teams in one very, very small space.

1874 Northwich and Vics split a few years ago; and its hurting both clubs.

Hednesford had severe financial issues a few years ago; believe even with losing they may well be retrieved this season.

Stalybridge also suffered huge cash flow issues, whereas Linnets are completely standalone from the original. They've got a tidy little stadium on edge of town, and been very competitive for a good few years in that league.

Cheers. So the original Runcorn have folded?

Non League Round Up

National League North

Southport 3-0 Rushall Olympic
Brackley 3-1 Chester

A very solid win for Southport sees them clinch survival with a weekly to spare.
Sadly despite leading 1-0; Chester are now all but over.

Northern Premier League

Workington 0-3 Marine

If Carlsberg did weekends...
A perfect weekend for Marine results wise, with no fewer than 5 of their Promotion contenderers losing, resulting in confirmation of playoffs barring the world's biggest collapse.
Question will be can they usurp Rylands and gain home advantage?

Northern Premier League - West

In the race for promotion; some helpful results for our local sides.

Leek 1-1 Bootle
Hanley Town 0-0 Runcorn Linnets
City of Liverpool 5-0 Kidsgrove

All importantly didn't slip up, however like Prescot, Runcorn needed a win to clinch their playoff space.

Bootle gained a good result; away to the champions, with a big game on Wednesday now against City Of.

City of themselves won 5-0, which helps them out no end. As Witton kept pressure on with 4-0 Win, whereas
Nantwich suffered a shock loss. Which is great for them and Widnes.

As above, Vauxhall also clinched survival with a very important win at Picturesque Mossley.

Next Up:

Prescot Vs. Marine on Tuesday for the Senior Cup.

Regular season ends in 13 days, so not quite sure how, but this is only a Semi Final; with the final to be hosted the following Tuesday.

Are Runcorn Town not the originals? They currently play two divisions below Linnets. Again, no idea why RUNCORN needs two teams.

I thought the original was Runcorn FC, Runcorn Linnets share a similar crest to them and the same colours, whereas Runcorn Town have always just been a bit of a counties level side.

Linnets are well supported mind, get around 600 a gate which is good for that level imo.

You’re correct, Linnets is basically the reformed version of Runcorn FC. Amazingly I never knew that haha, always wondered where Linnets’ big fanbase came from, obviously they’ve just moved over.

There's a very, very big portion of younger fans who attended Linnets games.

But the old guard travel very, very well. Can recall few games I've seen them and they've brought a good couple of hundred fans down

Just wish their stadium was a bit more accessible!

The “Murdishaw Massive” I believe they call themselves, unironically. Cheshire kopites.

Nantwich Town were on a decent run, a win or a point yesterday would have been massive. I think they have kacked it now though.
They play CoL in a few weeks time, which will still probably be a decisive game in the playoff places.
I'll be there to give any glory hunting kopites a shoeing, no worries.

Nantwich’s two remaining games are CoL and Widnes, will have a massive say in the playoff race whatever the results.

Aye. They have done really well result wise the last couple of months, especially since the team has been pretty settled. Probably came a bit late though, they were really inconsistent early on.
If he can keep the nucleus together they should be pushing on next season, but it seems players come and go quite regularly at this level, so not sure how realistic that scenario is.

Widnes kept pretty much the same core first XI players that finished last season and just added some sprinklings throughout the season, so it definitely can be done. I think keeping the manager is more important than anything, whenever a manager leaves they tend to take a load of “their” players with them. If you keep the same manager in place it should be pretty straightforward to keep the team together.

I think the NT manager is banking on just that. They do seem to have a few lads at the club who are decent, but on loan from other clubs though. So I suspect a few will be called back. There's a kid called Kai Evans, I think he's on loan from Wrexham. Looked out of his depth earlier in the season but has been very good this past few months when I have seen them.
