Old Photos Of Where You Live

Birkenhead market, you could get anything and everything there, until it burned down.

My first Saturday job was in the greengrocers right across the aisle from there. Can almost smell the produce just from looking at that.

The street hasn't changed much. The Rathaus with that tall clock-tower is still there. On the right, roughly where the lady in the white dress is standing, is a Kaiser-themed Restaurant with excellent traditional grub, at normal prices. It's called Gardestube and purposefully styles itself as a pub/eatery from the time of Kaiser Wilhelm II (1900-ish).

They say it's been around that long too, so it's almost like a time capsule.

Do they have duelling matches, for that added authenticity ?

The Rolling Stones at the Tower Ballroom on the 10th of August 1964. Apparently...... Jimmy Saville is one of the photos, I think it's the second one stage right but I'm not certain

Top photo shows Bold colliery with Clock Face colliery in the background. The second photo shows Bold Power Station. All are now gone and barely any sign of them remains.
Most of this land is now reclaimed woodland, meadows and marsh It's beautiful and is where I do much of my walking. It now comprises of Clock Face country park, Bold Moss, Colliers Moss and Sutton Moss.
Clock Face colliery closed in 1966 and Bold colliery and power stations remained in use until the 1980s. It's incredible how quickly nature can recover from heavy industrialisation. ?

When I was still in school I had a job on Birkenhead market and also used to travel to Wrexham on Monday's' Ellesmere Port (Turesdays) and Frodsham (Thursdays) when I was off school. The other three were all 'build your own stall markets, hard work. As a result of knowing all the security guards at Birkenhead market I landed a job as a rat catcher around the produce and butchers aisles there... frightening stories!
