Old Photos Of Where You Live

When I was still in school I had a job on Birkenhead market and also used to travel to Wrexham on Monday's' Ellesmere Port (Turesdays) and Frodsham (Thursdays) when I was off school. The other three were all 'build your own stall markets, hard work. As a result of knowing all the security guards at Birkenhead market I landed a job as a rat catcher around the produce and butchers aisles there... frightening stories!
Would you remember the swilling out room where each stalls bins were emptied and then cleaned and swilled out with water? Place stunk of bleach but my lasting memories are of seeing cockroaches the size of your fist scurrying around the floor.

I dont recall the 'swilling out room' but the big roaches hold a special place in my memory. Friday and Saturday always were busier with lots of people but wednesdays were quieter and more providential for wildlife.

very few interesting pictures from my whereabouts, except these sort.

*the musician pictured below is not from here, but locals like to talk about how he performed here before he "got big"

Awesome pic.

Awesome pic.

I know little of the history and most of this is wiki regurgitation, although some is also local lore. That radio show was nationally broadcast and maybe was Elvis' first radio spot. He allegedly signed a 1-year contract to perform every weekend. One of the show's sponsors was a local donut shop (still here today, still great) and apparently not only did he love the donuts (he loved all food, it seems) but also wrote a jingle for them. I've never heard it though.

I believe that location still stands, but they've added a "hot Hot HOT" sign that used to be lit when the donuts were fresh. It has reduced hours now if it's open at all.

*Just learned that Southern Maid has an Auckland franchise... (is there a mind blown emoji?)

Somewhere in my vast collection of Elvis memorabilia I have a pic of Elvis eating donuts in that Donut Shop around 1954/55.
Will try and find it. TCB

When the rs Bro in Law was an apprentice sparkie he had to work nights in the old tunnel doing maintenance etc.
They were knocking down parts of old Birkenhead, he said there was a literal stream of rats going through the tunnel.
