Five year deal for Messi, even at a 50% pay cut, seems mental to me. He'll play two years, leave and Barca will pay up the rest of his contract, meaning it's not even a pay cut but more akin to spreading the payments over five years.

As ridiculously good as he is, given the drama around him, the expense and - critically - his age, I'd have been tempted to cut and run if I were Barca, but I assume they simply don't have the money to replace him and/or reshape the squad

They lose him they lose a massive about of revenue kits wise and competition wise

They couldn't let him go

Messi could drop deeper as more a midfield playmaker like Iniest....maybe even deeper like Xavi. He is THAT good a footballer, passing is off the scale good.

But Xavi and Iniesta were also THAT good at football and left Barcelona at 35 and 34 respectively.

Very true.

But they was well on the way down at that stage.

Right now, Messi is still THE best player in the world.
Exactly, there are many at the club including Puyol, Pep and Xavi who believe he could easily play into late 30s - everything IS dependent on his health & motivation

Great defender. Least some of these Chelsea academy lads are finally realising they can't just go on loan forever.
New FIFA loan rules kick in 22-23 i think.

It will stop the likes of Chelsea and also the Italian clubs stockpiling young talent.

Clubs will eventually start buying clubs to be feeder clubs to get around it though.
