Oumar Niasse

Like most people, I'd never heard of this dude until the weekend

His YouTube highlights worry me a bit - his technique looks really ragged and a lot of the goals he scores are when he gets a favourable bounce of the ball etc

He's effective (or those highlights on YouTube wouldn't be there), quick and seems quite strong, but there's something about those highlights that makes me nervous.

I suppose he can't be worse than Kone, so maybe I'm worrying about nothing.

I don't think I was worrying about nothing...

Would Niasse be under such scrutinism if we were doing good and competing for CL-places?

Seems to me he´s just another stick to beat the manager with.
No he wouldn't and in an ideal world he shouldn't be getting judged as some are doing, yet most people aren't judging the player but the transfer.

With the money we outlay for his services, combined with what we've seen and the comments from Bobby, it's not unnatural to have concerns.

Is it simply browbeating Martinez? For some yes. For others like myself, it's just asking why we've brought a player in who's clearly not ready.

As others have said, the January window is there to strengthen the squad and have we done that? Short term no; long-term the jury's still out.

Hopefully it does work out for Niasse, but if it doesn't then I think it's justifiable another aspect to question Martinez's recent activities.

I think the more concerning thing for me is that Martinez is saying he was 50%-60% ready, yet he played for Senegal in one match and was benched in the other.

So the question begs, is it fitness or the club have just over estimated abilities and profile of the player to fit in with the team.

I don't want to judge the lad as i haven't seen enough of him, what i have seen in the flesh has been pretty bad, but it all stinks a little bit of Koldrup to me.

I'm going to wait until he has a scoring opportunity and see what he does with it at least, before even considering if he's a good signing or not

Think the plan was to buy him in the summer. However, it was deemed wise to get him in early and get his 'adjustment' period out of the way this season.

He's looked progressively worse every time he's come on, but still have to wait until he actual starts a few games.

1) He might still not be fully fit
2) He is lacking match practice
3) He hasn't adapted to the pace of the PL yet
4) He has his price tag hanging over his head
5) He is coming in to a team with no confidence
6) He is coming off the bench trying to make an impact rather than being part of a starting lineup where he fits in well
7) He's just not very good

Any of these may or may not lead to a bad performance or two. If four or five of the above apply then the effects will multiply and explain the performances we have briefly seen so far.

He could be terrible, sure. Let's see next season though.

It's not that he's looked rusty or unfit. He just looks absolute cack, and people saying he hasn't started a game yet, well it will be much more difficult for him once he does that, it should be easier him coming on as a sub

I'm not saying Niasse is a good buy or a good footballer - he might be, who knows. Maybe he´s not.

I'm not saying that he should not be scrutinised or criticised for his performances or lack of.

I'm simply saying that I think he would have a lot more slack from the supporter on here if we were doing good in the league and playing beautiful togger.

If you think it would be the same - I'll respect that point of view, but disagree with you.

I'm thinking of Carroll too when I see that gif...

You are right, of course.

If we were doing well in the league no one would even be thinking much about him, beyond interested to see him challenge for a place come August.

Same with Bobby himself.....if we were higher up the table and winning the odd home game we would all be focused on the semi final and most forgiving of a few sub par performances in the next few games, Anfield aside, in the run up to Wembley.

Unfortunately this is what long barren patches do to football clubs.

They drain confidence among the players, stymie optimism at the club and breed discontent on the terraces.

Can we have a poll as to how well or poorly Niasse will do? Voting options are old players:

1. Daniel Amokachi - generally poor but gave us a few memorable bits of magic.
2. James Beattie - starts off very slow, becomes decent, then just when we think he is going to kick on, he regresses.
3. Alex Nyarko. Say no more. key-unt.
4. James McFadden - played constantly out of position on the wing, generally poor, looks decent when played upfront though.
5. Denis Straqualarsi - becomes a fans favourite despite, or for being, so [Poor language removed].
6. Andy Gray. Becomes a beast and a legend.
7. Per Kroldrup. Plays less than 10 games, is forgotten and is sold on for a nominal fee.

Will start banging them in once he's settled and have lads on this thread running for cover.
