Our gutless, ineffective midfield

To be fair, I’m eager to see what brands does this summer. He’s not this god-like DoF... but In some kind of defence he was recruiting last summer for a different manager and a different formation.

I get that a good player is a good player irrespective of formation though. Looks like we’ve gone for specialists (that it turns out aren’t that special in a 4-4-2) rather than good all round players (if that makes sense).
What exactly is Brands' role in the recruitment of players? Is he the one picking them out or the coach?

Harsh on Gomes and Gbmanin with injuries, but yeah those 2 and Gordon for me, everyone else can do one.
Brian Clough once said that he was not interested in ( his own ) players that were injured or unfit , Mourinho took it one step further and said that he doesn't even talk to players that can't play.

Maybe Jose's taking it a bit far but in top level football you have to be ruthless.

If Gomes and JPG are unfit then what use are they?

Just spotted an interesting thread on Twitter.

I've been lazy and not fact checked it, but the summary of which is below;

André Gomes - 42 games - 1 goal - 1 assist.
Tom Davies - 100 games - 5 goals - 4 assists.
Bernard - 57 games - 4 goals - 5 assists.
Sigurdsson - 95 games - 19 goals
Delph - 16 Games - 0 Goals - 0 assists
Iwobi - 22 games - 1 goal - 0 assists
Walcott - 72 games - 9 goals - 5 assists

That is our midfield week in week out here are the stats combined.

Appearances - 404
Goals - 39
Assists - 26

I also see stuff like this and start to think it's not just my eyes deceiving me about how weak in the tackle this midfield is;

Stats aside, football teams with midfielders who don't score, or assist - aren't going to be good football teams.

In conclusion then - every pound we have to spend in the next window needs to be on midfielders. They'll all useless. Offer nothing off, or on the ball.

I agree, problem is getting rid of the crud that is in the way of getting new players.

I've wondered that myself, to be honest. Never been sure if our manager tells Brands what positions he wants to fill and then Brands finds the players for that position. Or if the manager tells Brands the specific players he wants and Brands tries to convince those actual players to sign for us.

Exactly. I don't think any of us really know. It seems like Brands is the only PL DoF who we criticise for bad transfer business. All other teams we criticise the managers for bad transfers even if those teams have a DoF too.

I always imagine its like this, of course I am NOT an expert, nor do I work in football, so take it or leave it.

Carlo and Brands meet up.

Carlo : "Marcel, our midfield makes me cry, I was making pasta last night and I honestly burnt pasta I was that upset"
Marcel : "But Carlo, Marco Silva spent all our money on Alex Iwobi, the cupboard it is bare"
Carlo "*Swears in Italian and checks contract."

The End.

ELEGIGGLE

No but really.

I think its a process.

They talk about areas they could improve, so they both decide they want a midfielder, Carlo tells Brands what he wants that midfielder to do, does he want him to hold, does he want him to creative, does he want him to sit, does he want him to get up and down and no, we wont get a midfielder that does it all, all players excel at certain things. So Brands goes away, talks to his scouts, has a look on Wyscout and checks his notes.

Carlo will also give Brands a few suggestions, Brands will have a look and together they make a decision.

He then goes back to Carlo and says he's got 2 or 3 players that fit the profile. Carlo then has a look on his ipad, checks all the scouting videos, checks his stats, has a look on youtube and all that jazz. Then Carlo says I prefer X player and if not Y player. Brands then goes and talks to the club, the players agent and the player and tries to get the deal done. If the deal isn't happening he moves on to player Y.

Then they repeat the process for other areas.

As for as sales Carlo will tell Brands who is and isn't part of his plans, then Brands will attempt to get that player punted ASAP.

But as I keep saying, the buck stops with Brands, he's the 1 who has the final say, he takes all the credit and all the blame.

Hi all, new on here but definitely not new to thinking that Everton have had no midfield since the days of Graveson, Cahill & Co. I would love to see more chances given to our under 23 players. Surely Baningame has to be given a go as we have nobody who can actually tackle. The lack of pace in the midfield means we can't hit teams quickly which we were able to do in the past. My choice for the next game would be 4 - 3 - 3 Pickford, Digne, Holgate (if fit), Keane, Coleman, Baningime, Andeniran, Gordon, Kean, Richarliason, Calvert Lewin. Nothing to play for now except pride and the youngsters will surely play with some of that? I know this will never happen though and the same old carthorses will trot out against Wolves.

The Title of this thread hits me in the gut every time I read it. Having been brought up on seeing the finest midfield players, to see the absolute dirge offered up now is what kills me.......

Except;
Gordon is unproven
Gomes looks eylegant, but is vastly over rated
Gbamin; who knows if he will ever kick a ball again, or even if he wouldve been any good without his injury
Walcott; the speed of a greyhound and the brains of a dustbin lid
y
As an owner of a greyhound (non-racing) I can definitely say that you could happily have used the term greyhound instead of dustbin lid! Ours has the IQ of a bathmat, bless her!
