Players out on loan 2023/24

Great loans for the young keepers, regular game time in winning sides but both their teams seem to play open attacking football so the keepers see plenty of action, a lot 3-2 scorelines in your reports. Playing for semi pro teams allows them to train with us with better coaches and facilities midweek whilst playing competitive football at a level above under 21’s at weekends. That’s perfect until they’ve put down enough data to convince a team at a higher level with better coaching to take them on and test them at that level. Their development during these loans will decide the level they end up playing, it’s not rocket science but developing young keepers is something we’ve not done well in the past despite signing lots of them. Maybe this new approach will fare better, Pickford had similar loans I think as a youth at Sunderland.

Aren't Chesterfield a professional club? Quite a few are in the national league and they're probably the biggest club at that level.

Maybe, I didn’t know that, he does train with us at least part of the week, he’s in the club training vids the club post

Another good win for Southampton with Mason Holgate on the bench. He was brought on in stoppage time to see out the win (or just to waste time?). They won 1-0 at Stoke and are now 9th.

Lewis Warrington was not brought off the bench despite Plymouth needing to chase the game. They lost 2-0 at home to Millwall and are 15th.

Splinters too for Stanley Mills whose Oxford United had a 3-0 win against 10 man Shrewsbury. They are 2nd. @Oxford - any ideas why he isn't getting a chance? He scored and assisted a couple of weeks ago but has now been on the bench the last 2 matches.

Yet another defeat for Reece Welch's Forest Green 2-0 away to Stockport. At least he is getting a regular 90 minutes. They are 23rd.

A clean sheet for Harry Tyrer as Chesterfield win 2-0 v Bromley. 3 points clear at the top.

Hello, sorry for the delayed reply.

Tuesday night was a bit of an odd one. The game was done after 60 minutes - Shrewsbury had just gone down to 10 men and we scored from the free kick after being on top all game. From that moment, Manning was happy to just kill the game. There were a number of fans who would've liked to have seen us really go for it and bring on the likes of Mills, but Manning is seemingly all about control and would've been happy to pass the ball round for 30 minutes and work on team shape. I actually think he'd rather win 2-0 than 4-1. I shouldn't really complain about an easy 3-0 win (especially given how bad we were last season) but it felt a little flat.

Mills certainly made an impact yesterday. Bristol Rovers were a good side and we were off the pace. They were targeting our right hand side and Stevens (right wing back on loan from Brentford) seemed to be carrying a knock. We managed to get in at half time 1-0 up and then Manning swapped Stevens for Mills. It instantly made a difference and that avenue pretty much closed down for Rovers for most the second half. That said, their goal came from down that side and Mills went down under a challenge (no foul given) before they scored. Some Oxford fans who had a good view were adamant there was contact, but it's one of those where the player gambles that they'll be given the foul and he wasn't.

Mills then got a red card - a really harsh one if you ask me. Perhaps some naivety there though, as the ref had lost the plot by that point and was handing out cards for just about anything. It was also a challenge he didn't need to make, but it is a blow to have lost him for 3 games, especially as we've picked up a couple of injuries out wide recently.

If you watch the replay of the challenge, it was a 'scissor motion' but one that I personally wouldn't want to see a card for. The type of challenge his dad would've been sent off for every week about 20 years ago.

Thanks so much for your comments. It's really useful to get insight on our loanees from a fan who is watching all their games. For me, Stanley Mills is one of the few youth players we have who has a chance of making it at a decent level. Even if he isn't starting every week, the experience of getting plenty of minutes with a promotion winning side should benefit him enormously.

No worries, I'll endeavour to keep you updated on Mills... although nothing for the next 3 games, you can see the challenge in the video below and judge for yourself. Problem is that I think it's one of those that also wouldn't be overturned on appeal, so he's not going to be playing again until 31st October at the earliest:

Bit of a pisstake that the Rovers number 6 got away without getting a second yellow. He makes contact with Mills after the challenge and then is keen to get the ball back in play... obviously they were losing and needed to get the ball up the pitch, but he was also trying to move the game on so the ref didn't give him another yellow. Him getting away with that and Mills getting a straight red felt like a bit of an injustice.

On the plus side, we got 5 minutes of Joey Barton ranting after the game about how hard done by they had been so that made it all a bit better.

P.S. congratulations on your win on the weekend - is Dyche starting to get things going?

I am not a massive fan of Dyche but he is probably the manager we need given our dire financial situation. He at least now has the team creating plenty of chances. We have a difficult run of matches coming up so let's see..

Didn’t create much v villa or arsenal. I have a feeling the dyche fan boys who’ve been mentioning metrics and XG every 5 minutes,
will not be so keen to bring it up after the next 4 games
