Players out on loan 2023/24

….sadly not. I think with Everton, players who go on loan are surplus to requirements so their failure to impress is usually confirmation that they’re not going to come through with us.

It’s a bit different with the likes of Chelsea who historically had a rich pool of young talent (regularly winning FA Youth Cups) whose route to the first team is blocked by expensive recruits. Our successful loans (players who have a career with us after a loan) are often young players we’ve purchased, like Branthwaite, Coleman and Holgate.

From an Academy perspective, we can point to Gordon, Osman and Barkley, although those last two had major injuries at a significant stage of their development. I’m not anti-loans per se, I just think it’s a bad sign at Everton when an Academy youngster is sent out.

Yes I agree but how many players that go on loan at other clubs come back and have careers at their parent clubs, not many I can think of.

I think a lot of it buys us time to see how they do. The one I’m interested in is Lewis Warrington. Whenever I’ve seen him play he’s looked a prospect.

A player has to go on loan to the right club at the right time, imagine there’s an element of luck in that too.

Well on the reverse to that bar rooney(generational talent) what academy players have been a success that haven't been on loan?

….my point is that our Academy prospects tend to debut at Everton, rather than going on loan. Managers want to use them, i think Gordon made his debut before going on loan. I’m not saying they have futures at Everton but they tend to get used before being moved on.

I think it is different with each player.
I think that Branthwaite, Gordon, Mills are players that management would consider Premiership material. There are probably a couple whose future could still go either way but most are being sent out with a view to developing a career elsewhere and maybe at a lower league.

The majority of loans will be to help players find new club.

We've gone from Vaughan getting his own athletic puff piece to 3 of our loans having to be cancelled lol
Recalled/cancelled not necessarily the same thing. Think the Welch loan can be looked on as pretty succesful. Has played the majority of their games in a tough situation. To me that is excellent esperience for him. I read elsewhere that the club might be looking to loan him out elsewhere, presumably at a higher level (be that division/higher places club in the same league). Either was he's got a decent amount of senior football under his belt in the last few months, and I'm sure he's learnt plenty, which is largely the point of these loans (ones where we aren't just shopping the player/getting them off the wage bill).

….its like I always say on this site. Many posters think going on loan is some magical episode in players careers where they join another club, play regularly and come back to Everton and play in the first team. It’s rarely the case.
Except hardly anyone, and certainly no-one who posts regularly in here/has any idea what they're talking about, actually says that do they? In fact I would submit that the number is roughly equal to the number of people who talk down every loan and the entire loan system, every time a loan is mentioned. One wonders why said people even bother reading this thread ;)

So none then?

Kind of feels like the loan manager doing his job and the system functioning as it should really. Better to try to get a better outcome for them than to leave them somewhere it isn't working for the rest of a season.

It's about experience for the player and also information gathering for the club. The information gathered from these loans might not always be positive (a player just might not be good enough) but it's useful to gather it.

Vaughan hasn't recruited or trained these players, his job is to place them at levels that will challenge and develop them not necessarily give them an easy ride. Some will step up to the challenge some won't, not on him.

We've done very well out of last season's loans - two players sold for decent money due to their loan performances (Cannon & Simms), one on the fringes of the team (Dobbin), one now a first team regular (Branthwaite). This season's loans aren't going as well but that seems to mostly be about the talent available.

Round up..
On Friday, Neal Maupay played 90 minutes and scored Brentford's opener in their 1-1 draw v Wolves in the Cup.

On Saturday, Mason Holgate finally got a start for Southampton and played the whole game at right back in their 4-0 Cup win over Walsall.

As mentioned above, Stanley Mills came on at half time with Oxford United already losing 3-1 at Coventry in the Cup. Coventry had increased their advantage to 6-2 by the 90th minute when Stanley Mills was injured. Apparently he went down after taking a shot, unchallenged and was stretchered off and taken to hospital. Sounds serious so a terrible blow for the lad who was having a good loan spell.

Harry Tyrer was rested again in the Cup as National League Chesterfield nearly pulled off a shock away to Championship side Watford. Reserve keeper Ryan Boot conceded a late goal as Chesterfield lost 2-1.

Zan-Luk Leban's Farsley drew 0-0 at Curzon in the Bational League North.
