Possible Director of Football

Nah - he's very comfortable working with a DoF. He brought in Zidane at Real Madrid to do that job. As long as he has a say in who it will be then I don't belive its an issue for Jose.

There were plenty of rumours he didn't get on well at all with Emenalo at Chelsea. You are right though in that the relationship is key. Perhaps if the club make a move for Koeman then they could do worse than approaching Les Reed from Southampton as well - they seem to have a forward thinking and positive relationship. This article is quite interesting about how they work if it hasn't been posted.

The January transfer window is upon us and there cannot be many clubs better equipped to make good decisions. In the longer term, if Koeman were to leave – for Barcelona, say – then Southampton would already know which coaches would fit their profile. Future proofing and being prepared for all eventualities seems simple but so many clubs fail to get it right.

I stopped reading here. Barcelona FML.

As an American, used to the model of a General Manager who handles player personnel decisions, and coaches coach, I've always scratched my head why in, England especially the manager has all of that responsibility. I have no idea how one person can do two jobs - both well. History has proven that there are very few who could.

You forget to mention that sometimes it blows up and that GMs with way too much sway over the owner do things like force Harbaugh out of SF. What's worse is a GM who actually hires the coach as they often pick the weakest candiate possible because they can control him. This is how guys like Ken Weisenhunt and Mike Mularkey keep getting hired.

We scout and sign pretty well. If the manager has no problem working with the staff I have no problem with what we are doing.

Remember reading that last year and it struck me how different it was to the perception of most DoF roles. This is much more akin to a business approach to recruitment and gap analysis of the team, but in football.
Got to say it's interesting the way Southampton have gone about this and it certainly seems to have worked in the recent times with stable progress despite losing players and managers on a regular basis.

Is that a serious comment? I wish we had been as unsuccessful as them in the last 26 years.

i was talking recently, zero title challenges since fergie left utd and im not sure what wenger has been at, he def looks like he needs some sort of director of football to help him out.

Seeing lots of comments about DoF not working in the Premier League.

Of the top 6:
Leicester, Tottenham, Manchester City, Southampton have them, Arsenal and Manchester United don't.

Wenger is old style, so you could see them moving to that model once he's gone. Given some of the mess around ManU transfers, you could see them benefitting too.

Think that shows it works.

I'm seriously unsure what to think, one thing I do know is that the manager and DoF need to have a very good relationship. If we were to get a manager they'd need to be clearly informed they'll be working with a DoF, if we did already have one I'd like the DoF to be someone who has a say on who the new manager is.

If we are going this route we need a proper dof, not just moving Royle or another former player upstairs. Its a complicated role that will completely shape the club. They need to be implemented first and foremost before any manager can be appointed.

You'd think if it's Overmars then De Boer would be the manager.

Not really.

I suspect we have no idea who the manager will be.

And when I say we, I mean the Board, they are doing it correctly, not rushing in like most fans want, looking around, speaking to people, interesting that the Emery links appear right before his last game of the season? Maybe we will wait till next Satuday and speak with Simeone?

Was looking for this type of info, what about the R's? Do they have one as their transfers haven't really been impressive.
