I remember watching, as a kid, the JFK V Nixon debate. In my opinion two of the greatest Presidents the USA has ever had....... Since then a succession of nobodies, culminating in Obama as the worst of the bunch, have come through and now the wife of an ex President who was caught with his pants down is perhaps the leading candidate together with a combover businessman.......what has gone wrong over there.......

Definitely a crisis in leadership in today's world. Fascinated by that 1960 election. There's been lots of scholarship on the debate you mentioned and how radio listeners preferred Nixon and viewers preferred Kennedy.

I think a lot of it has to do with the expectations we put on our leaders nowadays. The fundraising arms races, the 24/7 news cycle that'll pick at anything in order to get clicks/views, consequences be damned... No sane person would run for office in modern America. You'd have to either be nuts, an egomaniac, or a mix of the two.

The last honest, respectable person we had as president was Jimmy Carter, and we tossed him out because he said the things we didn't want to hear.

Who we elect for office says more about us than it does about our politicians.

Democrats (the majority of) are Tony Blair's kind of Labour.

The repubs in power right now are Tory++ but has a PO'ed at everything wing consisting of mainly of the white working class. This wing is similar to the BNP or the France National Front.
