The PL won’t complete the season whilst relegation is still on the table.

It’ll be curtailed if they don’t remove it as too many clubs will refuse to play. Continuing the league BCD will be voted down.
Haven’t the PL clubs voted to complete with relegation? Might’ve missed something.

No, they were asked to vote to go back training in small groups of 5 which they passed.

They were asked to vote through that if they do continue, games could be played at neutral grounds BCD, they thought this would go through easily, it never. It got voted down by the majority of clubs as well so they're now going back to the Government asking them can clubs play BCD at their own grounds but IMO even if that gets passed, which there's no guarantees it will, the lower clubs will still no want to play and either them or the players will make sure the games don't go ahead.

They are only 2 votes they've been asked to do up to now.

This week they're being asked to vote whether they ae prepared to train in larger groups doing a bit more contact which should go through.

As soon as they get asked to vote on continuing BCD with relegation still on the table IMO it will be voted down. There will be at least 6 clubs who will want this season over with and cancelled for various reasons.

The PL have put this vote off and tried to bribe the lower clubs saying they will be relegated on PPG if they don't play but the clubs know they'll win any court case over that so that's why they're not fazed by it and are prepared to call their bluff on it.

Unless relegation is taken off the table this won't happen and I think the PL know it. The Chairman and top man of the PL announced yesterday that curtailment is most definitely still on the table. The clubs at the bottom have ben thrown a bone, they won't let that go now.

Thanks for this. Useful update.
Not sure about the bottom two paragraphs though. Lot of supposition there - don’t votes require 14 clubs or more to be passed? That seems very feasible.

My feeling on this is that if other elite leagues look to complete then the PL (the world leader in many respects) will do the same. Reputational capital is at play along with broadcasters’ pot of gold.

The forces are at work to move this thing along. I genuinely think it’s already in the works - training this week doesn’t happen if the end game isn’t to play matches of football. It’s cynical stuff on different levels but that’s the reality, I feel

New PL chief on trying to get the games played home and away

"I do believe we can appeal to fans not to congregate outside football grounds or go to other people's houses to watch football matches in contravention of government guidelines."

Meanwhile you have the roads and carparks at Formby beach gridlocked and this gem. Anyone who thinks fans wont congregate is a complete moron.

The rs will be getting the Bullets ready for the everyone at Watford, never mind that Pearson is talking complete sense.

How many of their players and staff are affected, plus those who choose not to fit fears of protecting themselves and their families? How can it be fair if these players and staff aren't working or training now, unlike others?!?

Omni-shambles.

Talking in reference to Tranmere. If the league uses PPG they are relegated, yet they are 3 points off AFC Wimbledon with a game in hand. With another 12 games to play that is shocking - nobody knows what will happen in those 12 games.
They were on a decent run of form too, which happens with a lot of clubs in trouble when it gets to squeeky bum time, thus making a mockery of PPG.

Of course the position is invulnerable. Nobody has lost anything so far (mathematically relegation-wise), and nobody has won anything mathematically. On current form, Liverpool will not win the league - only on a PPG will they win it.

We have seen time and time again shocks in football, nobody can say what will happen so it can't be decided for them.

On current form Liverpool would still win the league cos they only need 6 points (and that's also assuming City win all of their last 10 games.)

Liverpools form in the last 5 league games.
W v Southampton =3 points
W v Norwich =3 points
W v West Ham =3 points
L v Watford =0 points
W v Bournemouth =3 points.

Or if for some bizarre reason you would want to include Cup games in the last 5?
W v West Ham = 3 points
L v Watford = 0 points
L v Chelsea = 0 points
W v Bournemouth = 3 points
L v Athletico = 0 points.
That would still mean that they would still get the maximum of 6 points needed to win the title. Just saying like.

P.S. Yes, I am running for cover :D

If you think nobody should be allowed out, the simple thing to do is to not go out; this whole culture of, "Well I've not been told not to" really annoys me.

People who think that there won't be some form of mass gatherings either at the grounds, to watch the game or if that lot win the league are deluded.

Absolutely. But voiding the lower leagues brings with it arguments from clubs in secure promotion positions - their sense of grievance is every bit as valIid.

The key point is that voiding rather than PPG in Lg1/2 doesn’t create a smoother conclusion to their seasons. Both sides have legitimate arguments. It’s a legal vipers nest, in truth - which is a key reason why the top leagues in Europe are looking to finish BCD.
Declaring null and void is the safest legal option. How can anybody argue bias against a global pandemic ?

I suspect voiding is, indeed, legally the least complicated option. But it wouldn’t be a smooth process. Either scenario is tricky legally when considering PPG or voiding.

However, a bigger motivating factor is obviously the financial rewards for completing the season in terms of broadcasting revenue. That’s the least expensive option. That’s a cynical reality which is why players went back this week. The huge issue with completion is that it’s BCD so the product is significantly compromised as a visual and emotional spectacle.

He's totally correct; they certainly can appeal to fans not to do this. While they're at it, why not appeal to fans to wear suits of armour and break into Gregorian chants when the teams come out?

They were never to going to void for obvious financial reasons.

I'm not sure any of us know what the safest legal position is because there's no precedent. But the safest thing to do is obviously end the season one way or another but they arent going to fo it.

They were on a decent run of form too, which happens with a lot of clubs in trouble when it gets to squeeky bum time, thus making a mockery of PPG.

They also invested heavily in the squad during January so they had a chance to stay up which makes their current form sorting they've worked hard to implement.

I do fear lower league clubs could get shafted as they may not have the financial power to take on the authorities.

That won't be the case in the PL. Anyone who tries to send down a club from there without allowing them to play all the games as per the rules at the start of the competition or by a set of rules that at least 14 clubs have agreed to alter won't have a leg to stand on.
