Moyes at PNE before he joined us had them playing very tidy football. They beat us with it too.

Martinez transformed matters when he came in in terms of style of play, but it was only because the players who could handle the transition were already there (with the addition of Barry and McCarthy) that he was able to do so.

Moyes' big problem was having no faith in the quality of the players he brought in. He should have let them off the leash a lot more than he did, and we reverted a lot in all his time here to that big long diagonal ball front to back for Ferguson/Cahill/Fellaini to knock down and win the second ball.

The addition of McCarthy Barkley and Lukaku were the missing pieces to take that team to another level. With Mirallas already in situ as well we finally had a midfield with the pace and power to dominate teams (but they could play as well) and upfront we had forwards who could either pick defences open or play on the counter. We also had pace all across the back line allowing us to squeeze up and individually defend one v ones. Add to all that we had Naismith Osman Deulofeu Jelavic off the bench, genuine options to change a game.

It’s the most complete PL team I’ve seen at Everton with components to match opposition in different ways. We could have put 7 past title challenging Liverpool at Goodison on the front foot if players had finished better, yet also had the game to go to Newcastle and run a counter the length of the pitch.

The sad thing about it is we didn’t learn the lessons from that squad. We reverted to buying slow lumbering CBs (Williams, Keane, Mina), we allowed the fullbacks to decline without replacing them. We replaced Barkley and McCarthy with slow ponderous midfielders who couldn’t impose themselves on the game, couldn’t pass, couldn’t tackle, couldn’t scrap and fight (Schneiderlin, Klaasen, Siggurdson, Cleverley, Doucoure) and upfront we completely turned away from having three players with pace and the ability to link up, to buying slow hesitant forwards (Tosun Rondon Maupay Sandro Rooney)

I’m hoping that if we can stay up under Dyche we can start to turn around 10 years of complete failure to build on what Moyes put in place and what Martinez then built on in that glorious first season.

A massive shame for Everton in that period were the injuries to McCarthy and Barkley because back then there were few better than those two. McCarthy in particular was a rolls Royce. He was a bit conservative with his passing but he just owned a midfield through sheer physicality (as seen when we left him out v Palace and Barry was exposed). Even under Koeman when he got back fit he had 45 mins in the derby against Klopp’s dopers and ran all over their midfield, he went off at half time and they just took back control in the second half and they got a late winner from a Sturridge mis hit. When people talk about Gana playing well now, he’s nowhere near where McCarthy was at.

We craved a cup - and we had the team, on paper, to win one. But Moyes, a bit like Pep in the Champions League, always seemed to overthink those pivotal games.
Our approach in the 2012 semi against that lot was a disgrace IMO. Especially as we had just forfeited the Anfield derby to them too.

I think we are good enough to stay up, but that's all dependent on the first 11 staying injury free and not picking up red cards lol

We are wafer thin for back up and have a bench made up of bodies to fill that said bench.
I also think even more than depth we need the mentality throughout the squad, which I think Dyche is getting into them in fairness. We probably have the toughest run in of all the sides, Southampton are the only ones that are truly gone at this point, a falter from us against teams we should beat means that we'll be down too.

It'll be tough but a point against United at the weekend could make or break the season. Like you said we've not got that quality in depth like others, if we are to stay up we need to consistently outwork the opposition.

You could say the same about all the teams around us though. They are down there for the same reasons.

We could be 19th tonight if Leicester beat Villa, Leeds and Forest draw, and Bournemouth beat Brighton. But let's hope that doesn't happen! Don't mind dropping a few places, but I don't see us making it if we need to get 40 points this season. I think we can end on about 36/37.

Draw would probably be best, Leeds win preferably over Forest
Yeah, I'd say so. Mathematically a draw between two rivals makes sense because it awards 2 points instead of 3. A Leeds win would put Forest in all sorts of bother though but at the same time I think if Leeds don't get anything going I'm not sure they have the players to really tough it out either- so even though a point takes both past us in the long term I think it's the best result.

Truth be told the Bournemouth and Leicester games are bigger for us because in those there is a clear outcome which helps us.

So we won't be 19th then zzzzzzz

Some pessimists here have said that Everton might struggle to get out of the Championship if we do go down. That we will lose players like Pickford and a couple of others.

I watched the Burnley v Sunderland match last week and hardly recognised the Burnley squad. I checked back and found that
they used 15 starters in the two matches against us last season and only three of them were in the team against Sunderland,
plus one who'd been on the bench.

So, even with that massive turnover of players they're running away with that league. It can't be that hard.

Er, not that I think we will go down, just saying.
