It's incredible how this narrative persists that he was done dirty after trousering £10m for meandering around mid-table - again, there was no relegation battle to be fought - and buying Tosun and Walcott.

And rightly so. He was a stopgap manager who, after being offered a six-month deal and rejecting it, had the club over a barrel for what was essentially a compo negotiation.

There was still serious money being spent on transfers at that time, and there was nothing in his performance - here or anywhere else - to suggest that he was the right man for what, on the face of it at least, was an ambitious project. It's not like Silva didn't maintain that lofty position the following season, either.

If anything, it was a mistake to waste our desperation card by playing it when we didn't need to. It would have been much more palatable if he'd been hired to replace Benitez during an actual crisis, instead of us getting a fella who still has the look of a novice manager despite being on his third job.

Even the Yak ain't scoring in this side. Need more than one of that era. Someone dogged in midfield that is always up for a battle would be nice. Carsley maybe? Or some actual leadership on the pitch - probably Jags like you say.

I’m sick of people saying it. This what we face now is a relegation battle. Like 94 and 98. That season under Alladyce was a bad run of form and we were safe before Christmas in the end. Some of our fan base fall for the false narratives peddled by the scab 6 media time and time again.
