His effort levels and physical contribution both defensively and going forward are thankfully near enough a given every game, which is why his base level of performance is so high, relatively speaking.
He hasn't been frustrated and throwing strops, getting sent off etc because he's been playing great and everything's been going fine though. He knows right well that he's been crap in front of goal and hasn't exactly set the world alight on the creative side of things either. He has been absolutely nowhere near his best so far. I also don't think he sees himself as a left sided forward either. I think he wants to be a striker and is also frustrated that he's been played "out of position."
I think the debate on whether his best position is on the left or up front can be put to bed now. He doesn't have the shooting, crossing or passing ability for that position to be his best. I'm not even sure he has the pace. He's regularly opting not to take his full back on in games and pass it inside because generally they're all rapid and he knows he can't get by them (see Reece James as a good example). He's a striker, albeit a very different kind to our first choice, DCL.
None of this is to say he can't do a great job on the left though, regardless of how comfortable he is there. He's had the chances to bag either way and he'll get more.
