It's OK lads.... it was all the upcoming international breaks fault....

“Could it be the distraction of going away? Maybe for one or two players, maybe they were getting trips ready or concentrating on their national teams.

“But I just don’t think that should have had a say in the performance individually or as a team.

“I know that Argentina, Costa Rica and USA have World Cup qualifiers and you can understand it.

“But I think it’s an international break that many, many of us could do without.

“I just feel that after Saturday we wanted to be in and we wanted to work and we wanted to prepare the next game.

“You have to work with what is given and now it’s a break and we have to make sure we will regroup in 10 days’ time and prepare for the Man Utd game.”

Inter Milan coach Mancini: I miss English football. Come on Leicester!
by Carlos Volcano 2 days ago

Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini admits he misses the Premier League.

Mancini guided Manchester City to the Premier League title in 2012, and had a brief spell with the Foxes at the end of his playing career.

Manchester City are my big English team," Mancini told the Leicester Mercury.

“But Leicester are my second. I like English football, you know that. Manchester City probably won't win the league this season – so I hope Leicester do.

“I like [manager] Claudio [Ranieri]. He is a good man and a good manager. He deserves it. And because I played for Leicester I am cheering for you. I have that connection. I don't forget that.

“I like the way Leicester play. The counter attack. The space,. The speed. You break so quickly, like bam-bam-bam, but the team are more than just that.

“Leicester have a hard-working midfield, a busy midfield. They are hard to beat. The defence is solid.

“I am watching over here. Come on Leicester! I miss English football. The Premier is the best league, but I am over here now…"

Unless you can show you are a player to drive Everton forward, it will be difficult to see how you can stay in the side."

Roberto Martinez has warned his Everton players they risk missing out on a Wembley date if they repeat their horror show against Arsenal.

And the Blues boss admits his side are suffering a mental problem when they turn out at Goodison.

Everton slumped to an eighth home Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday when goals from Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi earned the visitors a 2-0 win.

It was a desperate performance in stark contrast to the stirring display that saw off Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final the previous weekend.

And with four Premier League games to come before the semi-final – including trips to Manchester United and Liverpool – Martinez will not hesitate on axing those who ease up in the coming weeks.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about the semi-final but every game is vitally important,” said the Blues boss.

“Unless you can show you are a player to drive Everton forward, it will be difficult to see how you can stay in the side.

“We have got eight games to play for in the league. Every game has got an important meaning for different reasons individually and the players’ careers and as a team, and clearly we are not going to through any game with no meaning being at Everton.

“The competition for places is as good as it’s ever been. The focus and the work has been terrific, that is why I couldn’t see this performance coming. That is the most hurtful part of it.”

Everton have now conceded more goals at home than any other Premier League team this campaign.

And Martinez said: “I think mentally we didn’t enjoy our performance, I think don’t think mentally we enjoy playing at home and today that affected our performance.

“Until now it has affected our results, but on Saturday it has affected our performance.

“Did I see signs of a poor performance coming in training? The opposite. We looked sharp.

“The players were showing an incredible desire of wanting to bring that Cup feeling into the league. We knew we had four games at home and we had to turn the results around at home.

“You can turn the results around when you play well. And I think we have been playing really, really well at home, apart from the game against Manchester United which was similar to this.”

Everton are now out of action until they go to Old Trafford a week on Sunday with many of their squad away on international duty.

We cant have it both ways here: we cant say the squad is as good as the 80s then in the same breath condemn the defence for being all at sea. "A GK needs to come in and right back and if Stones goes a couple of CBs"...that's the usual lament, but somehow Martinez has currently at his disposal the best squad for 35 years. It's a cracking attacking outfit, but forgive me for not buying completely into the view that it's a perfect hand that he has to play. He hasn't.

There's four places up for grabs and not even teams with the cash of United and City are guaranteed one of them...one of them wont get a CL spot. But Martinez spending a fraction on his squad has to get one of these places. Has to unless he wants the sack. It's Alice in Wonderland stuff.

I know I've said this to you before but it bears repeating: the talk of 'lack of skills' from non-professionals in relation to a manager who has Martinez's career cv is pure comedy. His achievements at different levels, not only in terms of results but the establishment of blueprints for all aspects of the playing side of a club, make a nonsense of the claim. The necessary skills you speak of seem to be holding his hands up and delegating to an outsider all matters concerning defence. This isn't the NFL. We dont operate our organisations in that way.

The bottom line here is that you weigh up whether his time here so far, including a very good first season and these two middling and (as yet) unproductive seaons in terms of results (though the matter of playing style and performance, imo, is another issue entirely) and you ask yourself if Everton are a club that appraises that overall effort and comes to the unavoidable conclusion that a dismissal is the natural next step. (Me? I look at it and think 'miles off'...and that's just now without making the next round of the cup.) And that is the way Everton the club and Everton the supporters would usually see things too. But not for Martinez apparently. No, Martinez is held accountable to a different set of criteria...or at least for many fans he is at least.
Belter comment from a man who dismissed the views of Alex Ferguson as the ramblings of an alky.

Dave you keep attributing things to me that I've never stated. Anyway, regardless....

Consistently I have said we are the lesser of the sum of the parts, whereas Spurs, Leicester and West Ham are producing performances and results greater than the sum of their parts.

That's the greatest condemnation of Martinez' tenure - he's producing less than can be reasonably expected whilst other managers are consistently producing more than can be reasonably expected.

Re " lack of skills" it is self apparent that Martinez does not possess the technical defensive skills expected of a competing premier league team. In addition it is becoming more apparent he does not possess the abilities to prepare a team mentally for the demands of the Premier League.

Expectations are high because of the potential this group of players represent. That expectation can only increase now we have an investor/largest shareholder who is prepared to invest in the team - an owner who has been frustrated by Arsenal's ability to kick on - he will not want a similar experience at Everton.

Martinez is a fine man, but he does not possess the skills to meet our future requirements.

What's he going to do? Play Kone?

we have literally 6 international players playing in our defense. thats not 'having it both ways', thats you trying to have an excuse. whats more likely, all 6 literally just forgot how to play football or that our tactics are pretty awful so that we aren't getting anything of merit?

Precisely.
