I dont know if it was Johan or jordi. I've seen it attributed to both.

What I haven't seen is their opinion of his second and third seasons

I thought he was boss after season one too. Quickly became obvious in season 2 that he'd taken moyes defensive Lego apart and didn't know how to put it together again. Shame
Where did all the Cruyff stuff come from. It means nothing who vouches for Martinez, it's what happens on the pitch, to put of meat on that bone, didn't Sir Alex Ferguson vouch for David Moyes? How did that work out?

The amount spent relative to the rest of the league is still relatively average

Surely enough to prevent the downgrade a team from 5th to 2bottom half finishes in a normal season. Not to mention a season when the traditional big spenders are underperforming

Jordi is his mate, and obviously knows Johan through that. Martinez took Johans grandkid to Wigan also. If Johan thought Martinez was this world talent he'd of (though no direct quotes seen) probably recommended Barca not Ajax. But I'm mostly doing this to wind up Chicoazul.. x

I think last night is better left alone.

I think there are plenty of unanswered questions on the pro Martinez side of the camp particularly over does he have the full set of skills required.

The bar is set for Martinez because (i) he claimed he could do it (ii) to Martinez' credit he has a group of players who should be competing for CL places and (iii) the increasingly open nature of the PL and the sustained new challenges naturally lead to the question why are we not amongst them?

With the best squad available and the most open PL ever why has Martinez not grasped the opportunity and taken us to where he stated he would take us?

You and I both know the answer to that, he does not possess all the necessary skills to do so.
Bang on the money. Wonderfully put post.

'Consistently and sustain' or any other verbs/adverbs you want to use...they have not been applied in relation to challenging for a CL spot to any other Everton manager...a point you seemingly dont to wish to address.

I'll leave it there until such time you feel like addressing it.

:coffee:

How about just consistently top half.

Wasnt bobby supposed to be a step up?

He's failed so far to match our best premier league manager who finished in 4th.

Better be quick with that tea Dave lol

Quite simply there are two reasons, (i) we've never had a squad with the level of talent that this one possesses - commonly acknowledged to be of a standard which should compete consistently for a CL spot and (ii) the glass ceiling that existed in the Moyes era has gone, partially due to the implosion of most of the previous incumbents but also because other clubs have attracted fresh managerial talent. We attracted fresh managerial talent but he's proven not up to the task based on the last two seasons.

you know the answer to that question, it's a borderline facetious.

But the answer is, because the great job done at squad building means our squad should be aiming to compete.
....ahhhh!

...best let the man responsible get on with developing it further then.

The squad isn't the issue, it's how he's using it.

No-one is denying he's built a good squad, it's his failure to realise the potential of that squad that's the issue.

2 consecutive bottom half league finishes with that squad at his disposal would equate to failure

Whether you choose to acknowledge that simple fact or not, is irrelevant, it alters nothing.

To all the contributors to last night's postings on this thread

What on earth were you thinking of? In the Everton Forum too.

Apologies to other posters, less frequent visitors and readers, this is not the standards we expect at GOT.

Just to follow this up.

I've just banned/suspended a number of people who think they can vandalise their own community.

Breathtaking arrogance. It's not on. For some, their very last suspension before permanent bans - not wasting any more of my/moderator time providing a platform for fools who take the piss.

...a point that undermines your critique of this manager somewhat.

and (ii) the glass ceiling that existed in the Moyes era has gone, partially due to the implosion of most of the previous incumbents but also because other clubs have attracted fresh managerial talent. We attracted fresh managerial talent but he's proven not up to the task based on the last two seasons.

...and, of course, another way of presenting that divisional change is to say that the 'best of the rest' title which takes place behind the usual suspects in all seasons, barring this one, has heated up to a boiling point of competitiveness never faced by Martinez's predecessors....and that's a presentation you know has easily as much credibility as the one you present.

Bottom line is that Martinez got Everton in the CL mix in one of the three seasons he's been here, and in one of the two he hasn't he has made us very competitive in both domestic cups to the point where silverware can be reasonably said to be within touching distance.

That record under the previous manager(s) would NEVER have placed a question mark against their position. And that is what's not being addressed seriously here. Instead we have a lynch mob mentality that listens to no reason. If you were able to point to a massive pot of gold that Martinez had to work with which gave him a great advantage to other clubs traditionally around us then you'd have a very decent argument to make.

He hasn't. You dont.

Come on David. You don't have to reply to these, it could be Henry Winter commenting and you'd find reason to slander.
I'm merely asking who he is. It's twitter and therefore...erm...meaningless. Why post random musings? Who IS Mr Buxton and why should we take note?
