I said it a lot when we had Moyes here.
It means that finishing 5th repeatedly doesn't gain you anything unless you can use that team to win something.
And I stand by it.
So many people were sucking Martinez off for getting us 5th his first season and it meant nothing unless he could take that team and win something with it.
I like watching everton win games and play good football and play in europe, I really do, but it's trophies that matter. And 10 5th places in a row is a failiure if you can't win any silverware with that team.
The thing it is was meant as a criticism of 5th rather than a defence of 15th.
Yeah, again, so much wrong.
See, 5th is... 5th. It means you were the 5th best team in the league. If you don't then win the league or a cup afterwards, it doesn't mean 5th is devalued in any way whatsoever.
5th, in many obvious ways, is better than 15th. And financially and in terms of European qualification and attractiveness as a club to players, it's also got many advantages over winning the FA Cup.
In short - and I have no idea why this needs to be even typed - Everton should be aiming to finish as high in the league as possible, at all times, and the cups should be an added bonus that should never be the focus of any campaign ever.
