Roberto Martinez discussion

Yeah the stuffings we gave stoke and fulham is the real proof of how we're better under Martinez, much more than the performances vs the top 5.

I'd say apart from Liverpool the performances have not been bad but the results have not been good. I have never seen us play with no fear against the top teams like this season. I would rather us have a go than not and just hope we can nick a goal

Yep. I started to get pissed off with him when he made us look a right tit in Europe by trying to out pass better technical opponents and slow our game right down, thus negating our main threat against them.

Then the sticking with players clearly out of form out of pigheadness. And then totally shitting it in big games or playing for a draw.

The final straw was the 3-0 Gerrard derby where he played a weakened team and Liverpool beat us to move above us in the league.

I just couldn't imagine an Everton manager doing that in a derby.

Anyway he's moved onto United and we have Martinez and I'm happier now, despite the past five weeks or so slip. I reckon give time and money (as if) he will take us places Moyes couldn't.

Liverpool 4-0 Everton.

We never played like that at home, though.

Ever. Under Moyes we took apart city, utd, spurs and chelsea at goodison. Made complete mincemeat out of them.

Away from home, we didn't. But at home we did and as much as I hate the way this revisionist history is making me defend a manager I despise, I'm not going to insult everton by pretending that our great victories over utd and city that were great days for me in the ground watching were flukes with us 'hoping we could nick a goal'. Leave that crap to the media.

He didn't put out a weakened side through a choice of his own Danzibar. That was my point.

He chose to accommodate Heitinga's wishes, when he should have been in the team considering we were down to the bare bones and he was still on the books. Also got tactics woefully wrong that day, as did Moyes in the 3-0, Chico.

NEA if we beat Cardiff 12-0.

We always perform the match after a bad cup defeat. Always.

The 4-4 at old trafford, the 2-0 win over city. I got sick of them too. I think last year, that game against city actually made me angry rather than happy cos where was this everton last week, ffs?

But not so much this time cos I don't think we didn't turn up at arsenal.

Sorry mate, Moyes played a purposeful weakened team against Liverpool in an important game where they could go above us if they won.

Martinez didn't do that, we were weak because of injuries but he played the best he could. We just got pumped.

Big difference lid and yous knows it.

Still think he is a breath of fresh air for this club and the majority of us are more than happy with the style he has brought with him. Like people have mentioned before, this summers transfers will be a massive test for him. Doesn't help that we have ageing players and to replace them with a limited budget will not prove easy. I have faith in him and his philosophy.

I agree that he is very good for the club and that it's progress for us to be more comfortable on the ball. I'm just grumbling really. During pre-season he was shouting from the bench for the team to move the ball quicker but we seem to have been pretty pedestrian in possession for a while. Overall I agree with his faith in Barkley too but I still think it's a massive ask for a 20 year old to be given the role of playmaker. I'd like to see Pienaar used in the middle and Deulofeu given more game time before the end of the season.

How many players do we really need to replace? Joel and Stones are more than able cover for Howard and Distin. Pienaar is getting on but McGeady will flourish on the left-hand side with a full pre-season behind him.

I maintain that transfer business will be a completely different ball game under Martinez and that there will be a reasonable amount to spend each season.

Sensible, correct post except the bit about Robles - he's not even at cover level for Howard yet. He was badly gashmondo today

Tbf I don't know why we're arguing about who did sh*tter in two abysmal derby days.

Keep trying to remind myself we are a club in transition.

Doesn't make today's result any easier to take but gives a little hope for the future.

It was very unlikely that Martinez would improve us vastly in one season. In fact it was more likely we'd get worse.

There is hope. But a lot of patience is required. I see a fair few more days like today and the derby still to come.

The injuries have undoubtedly unsettled us. I'm a little disappointed that Roberto hasn't played horses for courses a little more and adapted his side to exploit the opposition's weaknesses, but I guess he can say that we've been to places like The Emirates, White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge and controlled possession, so there can't be too much wrong. But we're not threatening to score and little changes from game to game on that front.
