Roberto Martinez discussion

I agree that he is very good for the club and that it's progress for us to be more comfortable on the ball. I'm just grumbling really. During pre-season he was shouting from the bench for the team to move the ball quicker but we seem to have been pretty pedestrian in possession for a while. Overall I agree with his faith in Barkley too but I still think it's a massive ask for a 20 year old to be given the role of playmaker. I'd like to see Pienaar used in the middle and Deulofeu given more game time before the end of the season.

How many players do we really need to replace? Joel and Stones are more than able cover for Howard and Distin. Pienaar is getting on but McGeady will flourish on the left-hand side with a full pre-season behind him.

I maintain that transfer business will be a completely different ball game under Martinez and that there will be a reasonable amount to spend each season.

I agree with most of this, but what evidence do you have that he'll get money to spend?

Sensible, correct post except the bit about Robles - he's not even at cover level for Howard yet. He was badly gashmondo today

Apart from punching the ball rather than catching I don't think he did a lot wrong. Ozil's goal was well out of his reach, he wasn't fair off Arteta's retaken penalty and Giroud's goals were pretty much point blank.

He was good enough to keep City out and win the cup last year and he hasn't been far behind De Gea in the international pecking order.

Hey you! I'm dead angry with you and going to neg rep you and disagree with everything you say on here for the next three weeks. Then you learn. You big wrong.

No you wont. You just know it. Cos otherwise I will say something about Mrs R, just to prove a point.

Wait you don't mean the senior Spanish national team do you?

The remarkable thing about that cup final was that wigan's goalkeeper didn't have to play all that well.

Normally when an underdog wins a cup final their keeper has to be on top form (Foster for birmingham, montgomery for sunderland, beasant for wimbledon, etc.)

Robles didn't because wigan were just simply the better side. It didn't matter who they had in goal because they weren't under the cosh at all. Martinez will have to have some career to ever surpass that performance, it was superb.

No actual evidence, just speculation. We apparently had money to spend on Fer and/or Negredo last year, even if it was an advance on the tv money. We're something like £10m (if not more) up on trading so far this year. We could afford to refuse £15m or so for a 29 year old with less than two years left on his contract. And Roberto has said that there is money available. My gut feeling is that we want to make a big bid for Lukaku or similar in the next window.

We've spent more than a decade digging ourselves out of debt. I think we've finally managed it and that it's a case of balancing the books in future. I think the loans are partly to conserve funds and partly because we could never afford the calibre of Deulofeu on the open market.

We're less than a year into a change of style and philosphy. Martinez wants to play the same way, week in, week out, regardless of the opposition so that his way of playing is totally ingrained. Only when it's ingrained will he feel he can tweak it dependent on the opposition. That's going to cost us against some of the better teams and arguably cost us today.

It'll get better, but I'd rather watch us trying to play football the Everton way and having a go. The alternative is to try and win by pragmatism, which, as we know, hasn't worked.

I agree, 7th is nowhere. But I'm saying it's very acceptable, as a first effort.

We'll get EL football next season, no question. It'll come down to 7th anyway, but we won't need as we'll finish well and get 5th or 6th.

This manager is untouchable from any criticism for me. The only criticism I 'd put in his direction would be losing in the LC from a winning position. The rest of the so called mistakes are rationalised very easily.

Martinez has been an unqualified success this season.

Wasn't that long ago you were correcting me on my use of the word success, when I said taking us from relegation candidates to European battlers with virtually no spend was a success... You were very, very, very, sure in that Davek way of yours, that only silverware was acceptable as success..

Its achievement, not success... hey, not my rules.
