Roberto Martinez discussion

Perspective here guys.

Out of the top 7 from last year we have played them all. We have won only 1 which is a bad thing sure. BUT now we can build momentum from next week onwards, either we take a good result (or win) into the lower teams and actually start putting a lot of points on the board or we write this hard start off and then solidify ourselves up there afterwards so when the away games swing about we are in a much stronger position with confidence to take them on.

Now isnt the time to judge martinez, its when we have played everyone!

I am a fan of Martinez because he is excellent at scouting young talent and he is good in the transfer window. When we are good, we are incredible to watch. However, sometimes it feels like he doesn't do nearly enough during the game to put us in a better position to fight back in scenarios when we are losing. If I ever watch any of the top managers and they are losing, 80-90% of the time they will make GOOD adjustments to give themselves a much better chance. He needs to become better in-game; that is where I think he struggles at times.
The thing is, he was absolutely boss in the first season. He made substitutions minutes after the second half began and it paid off. Then...last year happened and his subs generally are down almost the minute when he makes them match after match.
Martinez is a bit of a conundrum to me. He inspires and demotivates my Everton passion in equal measure.
Ive been trying to put my feelings into words, this is perfect!

I will never understand that. His subs have gone proper Moyes-esque in the past 2 seasons.

Seems to me that last season's defeat by Chelsea seemed to affect him and his more cavalier attitude, add to that a loss of form from a few players plus tiredness or loss of belief from some of the squad returning from world cup duty then the europa league and it added up to a bit of a mishmash season, hopefully this season will see us back on track,I do think the build up and the game was disrupted do to the sad news onthe Saturday morning and I certainly think after one decent season and a poor one its a bit early to be shouting fr his head on a platter

Sorry, but if you'd told me (after seeing that we had to face last season's top 8 in our first 10 games) that at this stage we'd be 9th, within a win of 5th and 4pts off 4th, I wouldn't have so much bitten your hand off as torn your arm off at the shoulder.

Whatever the result away to Arsenal, we'll be in a decent position going into a much more "straightforward" (on paper) run of fixtures.

We'll also hopefully still be in the league cup - and how often in the last 20yrs have we been able to say that at this stage of the season?

People are being way too negative, considering what the fixture computer threw up to start us off this season.

I expect the run up to the new year to put us in a much better position.

To start the year we've played the following table positions: 16, 8, 1, 7, 11, 13, 12, 10, 3. A group that includes City, United, Chelsea, Spurs, and the club across the park.

Our run up to boxing day includes positions 2, 20, 4, 19, 17, 6, 16, 5, 18. We should be picking up points here. It may be wishful thinking but I would expect us to pick up at least 20 points out of the 27 available.

I get what you're saying, and I don't want to come across as negative (i made it clear in my earlier post that i think the start has been ok) but I really think people are massively overplaying the difficult start.

Last season was generally seen as a write off from start to finish. There were very few plus points and I think it's fair to say another season like that would probably see the manager under very serious pressure. But from the equivalent games last year, we got a minimum of 10 points (12 would be more accurate if we swap Watford for QPR or Burnley as they were both newly promoted too). This season we have 13.

It's an improvement, and that's why I say the manager's doing OK , but I just can't understand why some people seemed to believe we would struggle to get anything from this run. Somebody said the other day they only expected 1-2 points! That would have had us 6-7 points from safety already. Even in my most pessimistic state I would have thought we were good enough to beat two of Watford, Swansea, Southampton and West Brom. And we're usually good for turning over at least one of the big boys. If we had less than 9 points at this stage I would have been asking serious questions.

I missed the Arsenal game. What was the score?

Good call mate, I was a big fan of Royle
I gave backed all the managers, as for me they give it their best in difficult circumstances

Is right mate. Backing the manager is the right thing to do.

Is Martinez perfect? No, no he isn't. Who is though? 5 months ago, Jose was the undisputed heavyweight champ of the world, according to some (myself included.)

This thread is taking the biscuit with its content. You can sum it up as thus:

Some lad(s) reckon we shouldn't play Barry and McCarthy together.

Everybody hates Naismith. We probably should be playing Ossie. He's a terrible footballer, but, err, he's good at keeping possession of the ball - Like I said, terrible footballer.

We should have spent half of our budget on a new keeper.

Martinez's subs are proper boss when they work (remember when Mcgeady come on and put in a great cross for a goal?) but they proper stink the gaff out when they don't work. Nothing to do with luck. Honest.

Moyes was better.

That's basically about 300 posts in this thread, yet some plumbs are still banging on, writing frigging essays, and demanding some sort of debate.

Makes me wonder what they want. :p
