Roberto Martinez discussion

perhaps we should accept the unassailable conclusion that the "big boys" are better than us. I appreciate that this reality injection is painful, but the stats speak for themselves. Short of unearthing a Suarez quality player for around 10 million, our sobriquet 'the best of the rest' will not change.
Agree with what your saying with the budget we have we are probaly in or around where we should be. I thaught yesterday we didnt help ourselfs. Poor decision making when in good postions and some terrible defending Barry giving away the penalty and Giroud 1st goal when he is left unmarked with about 3 Everton players around him didnt help us. Our record against the big boys is shocking, i thaught with the United result we might have turned the corner in that respect.

The lad I know at work who is a wigan fan is a picture today. Good Luck to him.

BTW, Bobby needs to cut down of the pre and post match drivel, he did at wigan and he is getting back up there again with us.

Our home record vs them is actually quite good.

Our away record is awful, like.

Agree. I really like RM, but his 'we lost but played phenomenally' spin is overdone.

We've lost 3 games in London over the past month and we should have got something out of all of them.

We should have had a point at Spurs and a point at Chelsea, and we should have got at least a replay vs Arsenal.

We were 1-1 at half time with Arsenal, having drawn with them earlier in the season. We had some big chances to score that we blew. Silly errors allowed them to score.

The issue isn't that we are so vastly inferior, it is that we are wasteful in front of goal and the one key problem area we have is up front. We are toothless in attack, and our attacking play is far too slow and predictable. You cannot play the Martinez style without any pace, which is why we are falling short.

Admitting that 'the big boys' - you mean 'fellow big clubs' - are better than us has got nothing to do with it. They have beaten us because of our own deficiencies and our mental blocks , not because they were so much better than us.

It is. But we cant have it both ways can we? If you take a look at this thread and all others from just before Christmas and even after you'll see how much that optimism was being flagged up as a virtue and he was getting credit for it.

Too much short termism going on. It's understandable after the disappointment of going out in the cup and not racking up too many league points of late, but I think we have to have a more level headed approach than this. All told it's been great this season. My hope is we get back into decent form again and land at least another 18 points out of the remaining 33 points left. That'll see him go beyond Moyes' total of 65 in 2007/08 and underline what a fine season it's been.

I am still very much on message with Roberto and loving the new way of playing....in the main.

However, he needs to be answerable to someone at the club, otherwise we will be back in the Moyes situation where EFC becomes his own personal plaything to shape as he sees fit.

Will there be an inquest into Saturday's defeat and will Bill make it clear to him that Evertonians to a man and woman winced when we heard Robles was starting?

Why was he started?

It makes no sense at all to play the best team available in the outfield positions but play a goalkeeper who thus far has been far from convincing any time he has played.

Especially when your main defender and captain is injured and a rookie teenager is playing directly in front of him.

Bob insists on playing a certain way but in doing so any threat Everton posed from corners, free kicks (from wide areas or outside shooting range) and from high crosses whipped in from wide men has all but been eliminated.

In short, there is no Plan B.

In the lead up to the OT game in December, Bob informed the world that he would "rather lose 4-0 playing well than fluke a 1-0 win playing badly".

That seemed funny and quirky at the time but you know what?

Personally I would rather win "ugly" than go down playing the "beautiful way".

Someone needs to be letting Roberto know that being manager of Everton is about much more than an exercise in his own vanity.

This on toast.

Can't believe some of the comments on here...

This is martinez' first season! I'm made up with how he's completely changed the style of Everton's play and mentality, lets face it, other than against Liverpool (which was an error).. against 3 top London clubs we deserved minimum 3 draws..

So what i can't see is how bobby is in the wrong for saying 'we lost but played phenomenally' ???

Did we or did we not play really well considering we're playing away at these big clubs but controlling the game to a 50/50 standard, as aposed to the moyes era where we'd let the opponents control the game.

We've adapted to a new style, giving the big clubs real competition,... yes, the results havent gone our way, but youve gotta be happy with the performance and how martinez has changed our players mentalities and that we just need to give him time and the results will come... we are going to strengthen/reshuffle in the summer again and the future looks bright under martinez...

wind your necks in.... homo's :)

I dont know how fair that is. I cant find figures on corners/free kicks, but the stats on crossing show that out of the top 8 teams we are about average in that area.

United 646
Spurs 478
Newcastle 468
City 467
Everton 466
Chelsea 434
Arsenal 425
Liverpool 348

The enormous United figure possibly shows what the difference with Moyes' Everton and Roberto's Everton is though, so maybe it's that you're unfamiliar with a new and typical manager's approach rather than it being specific to Martinez?.
