Roberto Martinez discussion

Genuine question to some on here: would you like the team to fail for the next couple of months so that Martinez gets the sack? I genuinely get the impression from some on here. Like the wins are covering up the cracks.

Cleverly put, now any anti Martinez sentiment can be translated as look at degsy he WANTS us to lose.
why not go the whole hog and use the 'K' word.

The fact that is that any win will always paper over any crack...for now

It was another unconvincing performance and everybody's (nearly) MotM will get dropped...which is pretty unconvincing by the Manager.

I know martinez has been a proper melt with the howard-robles situation.
But those of you who want him gone, who would you like us to replace him with

Its basically pre-season for some of the players, match sharpness and fitness is an often overlooked thing.

Combine that with what that means as far as the rest of the squad has to do - ie more running to cover for players lacking fitness and it's a knock on effect of them getting more tired as well as a result of that

I don't think many people want Everton to fail, but I do think the some fans want Martinez to fail certainly, not necessarily either of you two btw.

Certainly not perfect but on the whole I'd stick with him. We've started the season with better football than last season, we're still in both cups (probably because Norwich are crap) and can still realistically get 4th. It doesn't matter how you get through in a cup tie, as long as you get through it and we did. In '95 we played poorly in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the FA Cup, Bristol nearly knocked us out.

He has some blind spots though, I feel he's just a little too gung-ho and defensively neglectful - the "we'll score one more than you" approach is not my favourite. He's said we're not setup for clean sheets but I'm not so sure that's good for Everton and if he sticks Howard back in, that would be poor. We should've started with the team we finished with last night - ET and pens would've been avoided.

Overall, I'd keep him at present.

No I don't want to see the team fail. But whether i'll be watching is another thing. I find the tactics mind numbingly boring and predictable.

Our style of play bizarre as it invites teams onto us. We never press the ball. It's such a passive style of play both with and without the ball that I find infuriating. We listen to Martinez talk about systems an tactical flexibility but don't see it on the pitch.

Allardye will be made up he's got us as his first away game...

Think there's one solution to our current problems. Get a specific defensive coach in. Wenger did this with Steve bould. And slowly but surely, last night apart they are becoming more resilient. Clear martinez is unable or unwilling to drill a defensive unit well. We look much better when the shackles are off and these halfy halfy lob sided line ups to help out the defence are doing us no favours. With a solid well drilled defense and keeper rom and the 3 behind him should be able to just do their thing without looking behind themselves too much.

there is ALOT of unconstructive criticism and almost joy when Martinez does something a bit odd/gets a bad result, I find it perculiar

Performances in a cup tie are secondary to the result.

I could care less how we played.

But then again you would say that having nailed your colours firmly to his mast. I wouldn't expect any less from you. You will do anything to draw people away that in the last 3 home games we have drawn against Liverpool, Norwich and been trounced by Man U.

However, people concerned about the performance...these things happen in cup games and the Norwich players drafted up for this match will have been trying to cement their place in their starting line up as much as ours. It's not chamionship manager and we are not going to steam roll every side we play.

I am actually starting to think our players are not as good as we think they are, also that the premier league is now full of clubs with strong squads.

Sunderland at the weekend is a massive game now for Martinez. If we fail to win that one I think it will set our stall for the rest of the season and we can expect a mid table finish at best and hope for a flukey win in one of the cups.

Partly right mate, we tend to overate a lot of the players we have - as most sets of fans do with their own teams - we also criticise some too much as well - again as all sets of fans do.

We also have bounced from overrating Martinez to now criticising him hugely, fact is though he isn't the second coming of either Kendall or the next Walter Smith either - he's in some grey area in between the two and will take a bit more time to figure out exactly were that is. Until then though Martinez needs to give himself every chance and not keep hamstringing himself with systems and players who he won't change, another year like last season without the excuse of European footy (which was a load of bs excuse anyway) will see him under massive pressure - and should we end up getting new owners he will be straight out the door.

The only irritating thing I have with Martinez is that I thought he was going to be a real good one. Time may still prove him to be that, but his positivity from the first season is now a long and distant memory.

What he does have in his favour is that he has actually won something. Not only that, with a side he should never of stood a chance of winning anything with. His tactical nous and managerial skills defeated Man City that day.

We are playing in a league where there are only 3 trophies to be won and we only have a realistic chance in two of them, even you need a lot of luck with the draw etc....If we finish outside of the European places again this season though, that would mean 2 seasons on the bounce and a very sure indication of going backwards. You could put that down to a number of factors, such as other teams getting stronger due to Sky money, but I am afraid it will still be down to him and with it being a results based industry so for me he would have to be replaced.
