Roberto Martinez discussion

one observation I've been sitting on for a while comes from the U21 game vs Preston a couple of months. All of the coaching staff were there and sat just a few seats away from me. Everyone seemed in a good mood, lots of bonhomie .. then Martinez arrived, barely acknowledged anyone and sat a couple of rows in front of them. He cut an isolated figure, unhappy.

I've long wondered if he suffers from the Napoleon complex.

Martinez reminds me of a boss I had. This guy lacked stature (& was conscious about it), had no personality that most people could readily associate with, competence was questionable, surrounded himself with sycophants whose competence was also questionable, said all the right things to the people who mattered, inc. partners .. all in all a horrible excuse of a man. Neither he or his sycophants could deliver, some sycophants were sacrificed, ultimately he was exposed for the chancer he was / is, was paid off and joined another Global 100 company in a similar senior management / junior director role.

I fear that we are stuck with Martinez for the foreseeable future & we'll be expected to accept mediocrity during his 'reign'. Any success will be luck rather than design. He is what he is .. and anyone who's ever worked for a diminutive latino who's out of his depth will understand.

erm...

It's all gone mental. We are 10 games into the season, some good games, some very good games and some poor games.

This is a tough league and our home form isn't great but, We are playing better football than last season even if we do revert occasionally.

As for last night, making that many changes is always a danger, I personally don't like it as I want this pot. However we scraped through, last season we would more than likely have lost that.

I'm being patient and watching what unfolds. Stop tinkering Roberto though please.

Was listening to the echos podcast pre Norwich and was interesting when they said how barring relegation Martinez's job is as safe as houses, from that they said this lack of pressure from the top may contribute towards our lax performances at times.

It got me thinking about the whole Howard situation, the bloke knows he can F up as many times as martinez has 100% faith in him, in other words, no pressure from above. This for me is the problem throughout the whole club, theirs no pressure on Elstone to improve commercial income, no pressure on martinez to get his act together, no pressure on the 1st teamers to up their game or face being dropped.

Some absolute weapons supporting us these days!

Last night it all I heard at the match was
"get kone off, he's sh@t"
Then when he was taking him off it was
"what you taking him off for booooooooooooooooooooo"

"Whys he never giving mirallas any minutes"
Then
"mirallas has been bo@3ocks"

Let me add
Barkleys lazy
Geri needs to stop trying the fancy stuff
"Whys he made loadsa changes" - then you moan when are players are knackered

Joel has gone from not being good enough to replace Howard to us leaving Gigi Buffon on the bench instead in the space of a day!

We are 10 games into the season!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10 games
We have played all of last years top 8, and the other 2 were Watford and West Brom who are 8th and 12th. The lowest team we have played so far this season are 15th and most of the rest are up around the top!

Yes- If we are sitting 13th by new year there should be some questions asked
Yes- That clown in goal should not be playing and Martinez is making a mistake keeping him in instead of Joel-but he is a young manager, he will make mistakes, instead why don't you ask things like Howard has been on the decline for maybe 4 years now. Why didn't we try and address this earlier with a Butland type signing then loan him out till he is ready?

But calling for a manager who got our record premier league points total 2 years ago has dramaticly got the average age of our side down and has brought in such sex players as Lukaku, Deulofeu, Funes Mori, Tom Tom Cleverley, & given our own kids such as Ross, Stones, Galloway & Browning a go is ridiculous!

We are in the quarter finals of the cup we never get past the first couple of rounds in & Chelsea, Arsenal & Spurs are all out.
a run of 3 wins in 4 or something similar can take us up to top 5 or minimum

Yes we have a fool in goal, yes Martinez has made mistakes and signed mcgeady!

Get behind the team you bunch of moaning Barstewards. You lot are never happy unless you have something to moan about

Whats the story Funes Mori

God, we are so lucky to have superfans like you among us

Cleverly a 'sex player'. Jesus wept.

He's gone at refs and fourth officials plenty of times. He was renown for it at Wigan.

I think you're reading in to it too much, he's not under any pressure at all.
I have never seen him as animated as that before, and to look so aggrieved and annoyed.

As for pressure, every manager is and should be under pressure it goes with the territory

I still think it was the first real cracks we have seen in his usual controlled mannerisms

Personally im gonna pass judgement after these next 4 games. Sunderland, West Ham, Villa and Bournemouth, we get anything less than 9 points out of the 12 on offer and big questions need to be asked considering the strength in our side. That on top of his blind faith in Howard and his inability to get in the playmaker signing in the summer are all valid criticisms.

The highest points total season was 2 years ago and he can't keep living off one 5th placed finish.

You take your life very seriously pal?

Enough to not write tedious monster posts like yours abusing fans for having an opinion.

Tell us more on (subtlety might be lost on you here)

  • why Cleverly is a 'sex player'
  • giving the most gifted youngster we've had in the last decade 'a go' is some sort of moment on the road to Damascus
  • us not being 10 games into the season, it's 13 and we have won 4 within the 90 minutes
  • Why other clubs being out of the competition is indicative of our own performance (when you think we've played Norwich, Barnsley and Reading (21st and 7th in their leagues, the latter two by the way)

One thing I would like to ask people is why do they keep on saying 'he got us our highest points total in the league two seasons ago, jesus wept' and then say '60 points this season would be good since we arent in Europe'. This is his third season, shouldnt the bar be where it was two years ago? This is fully a Martinez team at this point.

Cant really have it both ways, either he's a good manager who had an awful year last year but should get us back to where we were 2 years ago or he's an abject middle of the road manager who had one very good season and one awful season.

All of those points that you raise about the more bonkers fans are illustrated perfectly by this fella @orly during last night's match.
I'd ignore him mate if I were you. It's quite clear that you're not announcing yourself as a superfan but merely asking for some perspective. I'd agree with you.
I think some blues haven't forgiven Martinez for last season which again, I think is bonkers. They are happy to use last season as a gauge of the manager but refuse to use the season before to at least act as a balancer.
We have played well at times this year, and other times - Utd game the biggest illustration - have been poor.
I think we have to realise that the great thing about playing youngsters is that they possess that bit of exuberance, that we can watch them develop. The bad thing is that all young players are riddled with inconsistency. We can't expect one of the above without accepting the other.

Same with Martinez, do we laud him for what he is trying to do to the club top to bottom, and accept that he will make a few debatable mistakes along the way? I'd say so.
