Roberto Martinez discussion

Seems like it's not just Martinez and some GOT posters who think we have some lessons to learn from our mistakes.

Gareth Barry's joined in now

Gareth Barry has warned Everton they cannot rely on goals to get them out of trouble following their crushing win over Sunderland on Sunday.

Everton cruised into a 2-0 lead at Goodison Park but Sam Allardyce's strugglers levelled before Arouna Kone completed his hat-trick to help secure a 6-2 victory.

Barry, however, has urged his team-mates not to forget about the defensive side of their game with Roberto Martinez's men having already conceded 15 in 11 games, the joint second-worst among the Premier League's top 14 sides.

"We are enjoying the win but the experienced players know on another day you want to be a lot tighter," said the midfielder.

"It is important we don't get away from the fact there is a lot of confidence from the attacking flavour but throughout the week we will be working on that attacking-defending balance, because we don't want to be giving away too many chances like that.

"Their first goal changed the game. If we are going in at half-time at 2-0 we are really comfortable and the confidence is different and their attitude to the second half is different. There are a lot of lessons to be learned as with 30 seconds to go we've got the ball in their half and all of a sudden it's in the back of our goal.

"We should be better than that and there is experience on the pitch to stop that happening. But fair play to the lads we bounced back from conceding the second and created a lot of chances."

Bloody plotters everywhere.

He also went on to praise Kone and Deulofeu, but that's not going to make anyone fume, so I'm glossing over that

:coffee:
Did he also call Martinez a clown, agitate for a new manager to come in and give the current one no credit whatsoever since he's been here?

If so, then throw Barry in with the plotters. If not...

In fairness Barry and Martinez have took negatives from a positive result and so they should. Its not just about positives from a poor result. Just shows that we won't rest on our laurels. Its just some people on here will solely look at the negatives and highlight them but be stingey when it comes to the positives.

Agree completely with this. Sunderland were rubbish but for a lick of paint we could have been two down early on. With a baying moody Goodison the day could have been very different. It wasn't and that's great but always good to keep a proper perspective on things.

Whatever the faults are with Martinez - he's a massive upgrade on Moyes.

Equally others on here will highlight all the positives and get a tad arsy with anyone daring to mention any negatives.

The reality is, as always, somewhere in the middle ground that Martinez and Barry are inhabitating.

lets see where we are finishing in the league on a consistent basis before making such claims

Serious (non-loaded) question

is it all about final position for you? or does happiness, playing style, building a young team come into it as well.

Personally, I think Final position has a role in it as an indicator, but the feel is (generally) much better around the Club. It's not that I wouldn't like immediate results, but I can see we're building towards something and at least trying to be exciting about it (not that it always works)

we are like spurs under ardilles, score goals but always look like conceding. i don't find knowing we are close to conceding goals any minute exciting at all, nor some of the slow football. but if we end up consistently finishing in the top 6 doing it then im not complaining. i doubt it though.

he wants a career in management! the sly..

It's a bit off-topic, but I think Barry's one of those rare people who have played at a very high level who would also make an excellent coach.

I've no idea if he has plans to move into coaching when his playing days are over, but of all the players in our squad, he's probably the one that's learning most about management by working with Martinez

Good point. If you speak to many spurs fans even though they finished in their traditional Europa league spot, they are very happy with the philosophy and youngsters pochettino has there

The problem with your question is that even if we are building towards something with a young team, if we finish low those younger players we are banking on to get better and we, as a result, increase our position, are likely to want to move on.

I liken Barry akin to a catcher in baseball. They see everything and are involved all over the place. And they typically have to work a lot harder at staying in the game so learn it better as a result.
